Anyone have any feedback on using Amsoil synthetic Diesel oil 15w-40 in your tractor? I was thinking of running it in my John Deere's with yanmar engines. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I don't use it in my tractors but I definitely use it in my welder...I've got a 1999 Miller Trailblazer with a 20 HP Onan. I bought it with 11 hours on it about 2 or so years ago. I changed the oil almost immediately as the original oil had been in it for about 4 years (but only had 11hours on it, plus it spent the entire time in the guys garage..). Once it had about 22 hours on it I changed it/fliter with 15-40 Amsoil syn. I've got about 46 or so hours on it now and have had not complaints from the Onan engine....it runs great and fires right up in the coldest or dampest weather. Just make sure you break in your engines piston rings prior to using synthethic oil as high oil usage can ocurr if you don't let the rings seat properly first. Next oil change will be Amsoil again. I'm just curious, why not in your tractor? Why 15W40 a diesel rated oil in a gasoline engine? Amsoil makes all kinds of oils for gasoline engines.

As you may be aware, diesel oil holds "stuff" in suspension better than gasoline engine oils. I use 15-40 dino in all my tractors/ both diesel and gasoline. I change the oil religiously in them as some of those engines are over 50 years old and still run quite well. Also the Onan is:1.air cooled and 2. Onan doesn't make engines anymore---parts are VERY expensive and I'm not gonna take a chance. I understand from the welding shop that originally sold the unit (I talked to guy that sold that unit to the guy I bought it from) that if taken care of, it will last over 4000 hrs before the first rebuild. Miller Trailblazers are top of the line. PS I like 15-40 syn in this unit and most syn gas lube oils don't come in 15-40. BobG in VA

If you are not sure about using the Amsoil 15w40 Diesel oil in your John Deere, you could also use the Series 3000 5w30 Diesel oil in it. I have used the 5w30 in my NH TC33DA since first oil change with good results even in hot summer weather.

The Series 3000 and the 15w40 (DEO) have excellent additive packages. The TBN on both of these is 12. Far and away more robust additive packages than the off-the-shelf oils, synthetic or mineral. The 15w40 has a low pour point of -46F, so it wouldn't be a problem for winter or summer use.

I know of some farmers that consitently go up to 300 hours on oil changes using these with top line oil filters such as Donaldson.

With anything... you get what you pay for. I never blast anyone for using off the shelf oils if they want to, but if you want your equipment to last and reduce your maintenance costs you have to pony up to the bar. Heck, with the Preferred Customer pricing, Amsoil isn't that much more expensive.

I'll let you know in another 50 hrs of use or so...It's been in my 4310 for the last 20 hrs. So far no problems, of course, I wouldn't expect any either.

Next cycle I'm going to try Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40. I'll get a UOA of each and see which it likes.

I use Mobil-1 15W-50 in my Kubota L4400, live in central indiana, and never had a bit of trouble in winter or summer. I didn't want to go with 5W-30, seemed too thin.. and that was all I could find. Synthetics are great, I have them in everything I own, from generators to pressure washers to my Kubota. Newer equipment seems better with the synthetics. Older engines can smoke, I assume from the detergents cleaning the old oil out. I may switch to the Amsoil, for better viscosity choices. Any oil you use us good, just keep it clean and changed, and you should be fine.
