Amish farm under threat from U.S. federal govt for refusal to abandon traditional farming practices

I was under the impression that the Amish had their own system and weren't bothered/regulated by the government.

• Raw milk produced by Miller’s Organic Farm in Bird-In-Hand, Pennsylvania, was the likely source of this outbreak.
  • Two people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria were reported from California (1) and Florida (1). Both illnesses occurred in 2014.
  • Both people were hospitalized, and the ill person in Florida died as a result of listeriosis.
  • Although the two illnesses occurred in 2014, the source of these illnesses wasn’t known until January 29, 2016, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed CDC that whole genome sequencing of Listeria bacteria from raw chocolate milk produced by Miller’s Organic Farm showed that it was closely related genetically to Listeria bacteria from the two ill people described above.

Two people got sick, one in california, one in florida, In 2014. The FDA took 2 years to trace it back to the farm in question. I don't agree with raw milk, but if it's labeled as such, and people know the risks, what's the problem?

I was not impressed with the so called news article.
However I am even less impressed with many of the USDA regulations.
I grew up drinking raw milk. If the animals are healthy and cleaned before milking
and the milk is cooled promptly and kept cool it is not a problem.
Multi-state 2? outbreak 2 people wow we need to really stomp on that.
How did they get the milk had they traveled to PA, sure couldn't ship raw milk that far.
Also drinking raw milk and non-clorinated water will expose your body to many different
bacteria which your body will fit and you will actually become healthier for it.
Many years ago at our county fair we had an episode of E. coli which got quite a few people
sick. An interesting fact was that of all the people that got sick none had grown up drinking raw milk,
none had come from households on private water systems.

Also another interesting fact is that most all the people that visited that county fair didn't drink raw milk and are on non private water systems, and they didn't get sick.

Up until last fall I drank raw milk for many years prior and grew up drinking nothing but raw milk.

I also made all of my own butter all of those years too.

I never got sick, nor do I know anyone who did get sick from raw milk, it's like Lou said, it's about how the milk was handled!

The only reason I quit is because my friend sold his cows, I wish I could still get the raw milk from him and still make my own butter too!

Only Raw milk on the farm as a kid… sure enough every summer I would get sick for 24 hours and then be fine.

Later years I boiled the milk and made hot chocolate and never sick.

Grandfather in his 90’s never once visited a doctor and raw milk every day sometimes still warm…

To still be able to provide raw milk to customers in later years they sold the cow to the customer or leased and charged for feeding and milking but NOT for the milk as they could no longer SELL raw milk…

Raw milk still needs to be refrigerated so it could have been shipped to California if refrigerated. I also grew up drinking raw milk and mom made butter.

The thing is, since it isn't pasteurized it doesn't stay good as long as pasteurized milk, so if an individual bought it and didn't store it properly or drink it soon enough, how is that on the Amish.

Though I think that it is a bit of BS that the Amish get a pass on regulations period. They get a pass on a lot of things they shouldn't but not might fight.
