I thought the ecoboost engine in the new F150s are pretty good on gas. It's still a truck, but compared to previous iterations, they are making some good advancements.

Best selling vehicle in 1975. Ford Cutless - about 20 mpg.
Best selling vehicle in 2013 (and for most of the last 15 years) Ford F Series - about 15 mpg.

How's that oil dependence thingy working out for 'ya?

(Best selling 'pickup', and second best selling vehicle overall, in Australia is the Toyota Hilux. About 21 mpg. Unfortunately is 100% imported.)

Hey I drive a 4x4 F-150 and get right at 19.5 mpg with it on a trip, if I keep it below 65 I get over 20 mpg. I know that isn稚 great gas mileage, but it is a vehicle that hauls lots of stuff and pulls trailers when needed.
We need 4 wheel drive to get around in snow country and our F-150 4-door is great with room for all kinds of stuff in the back seat area.

Americans vote with their wallets. If they valued oil independence higher than other factors, there are plenty of more fuel efficient vehicles for sale from both foreign and domestic manufacturers. That may all change if gasoline prices go up suddenly.

Love my 3.5 Ecoboost engine. It will get an average 19.5 with both highway and city driving and I've averaged over 22mpg when I keep it at 65mph.
The mileage will drop to 18-19mpg when your up between 70-75, not that I would know, "my friend" told me. :D

I have a 1989 toyota corrolla sr5... carb, no fuel injection... 36 mpg all day long highway or city driving. Insurance is dirt cheap and old enough that there is no car tax. In another year, I can put antique tags on it and no more buying license plates or dealing with state inspections. My ford f150 has been a piece of junk since day one and gets horrible gas mpg.

If I wanted/needed gas mileage I would not buy a truck. I need a truck for hauling and towing. Mileage? It is just one of many factors not the deciding one.
