JD 1070
I am mainly posting this for google posterity in case anyone else ever runs into the situation and needs this part. On the JD 1070, there is a short stub axle/pinion that feed power from the rear differential to the final drive planetary gears. The JD part number for this part is M804666. This part is no longer available from John Deere. Apparently the right side shaft fails before the left because it is longer and more likely to twist off.

However, through some good research and diligence on the part of the parts manager of my local JD dealer, he was able to get the information from JD to find out what the actual Yanmar part number for this shaft is. As of the date of this writing, this part is still available. The Yanmar part number is 198320-33422.

Hopefully this will help someone that has a 1070 with a twisted off stub axle find a part to get their machine back up and running.

Michael

Hi Michael
Thanks for the info. However I am just off the phone with Hoye Tractor and have found that the Yanmar part is not available either. Did you find one somewhere else?
Broke my 2nd one in two years and now am not able to find another.
Thanks,
Roy

Wow! You've broken 2 of them in 2 years?? Maybe you should take it easy on that thing. :)

All I know is that my JD dealer went directly to Yanmar for this part. Perhaps yours can too? Other than getting it directly from Yanmar, or a Yanmar dealer who happens to have one in stock, then your only other options would be to either find a used one or find a machine shop that can make you one. Option B would probably be pretty expensive as the tooling required to make this part is not common.

If you find a used one, I would recommend trying to find more than one. Just in case you break it again.

Have been looking around the U.S. for 3 days. John Deere says I'm out of luck. Had I known it was not going to be available I would have bought 2.

Maybe the Yanmar dealer can do a reverse parts look up and tell you what Yanmar models this stub shaft fits. Then you can search for used parts for those models too.

Other than that I don't have any other suggestions. I guess I got lucky to get what I got when I got it.

I contacted a Yanmar dealer and unfortunately they were no help.
Other tractors they made for themselves and other companies. But the 1070 was only made for John Deere.
The local John Deere dealers tell me I have a $10,000 yard ornament. It's 21 years old and they have no parts?

Just because the 1070 was only made for JD doesn't mean that part wasn't used in other machines. That was the idea behind doing the reverse lookup.

As for JD parts I get your frustration. Since I am aware of the issue with the shafts on these tractors I make it a point to be extra careful with mine to avoid situations where I might break it.

JD is becoming just like any other corporation now a days. They don't want you fixing your old tractor, they want you to buy a new one. Sourcing parts and keeping them in inventory costs money. For all we know the 1070 may have been a slow selling model which would make it even more likely JD would obsolete parts for it as quickly as possible. Plus we don't know what the demand is for that part. Even 50 a year is a drop in the bucket and too low to entice JD to go through the trouble of getting more.

If you can't find a used one then your only other option is to find a machine shop that will make you one. Or 3. Heck maybe you can get a bunch made and sell them on eBay for $500 or something. I am sure given the choice between spending $500 for a shaft versus junking a perfectly good tractor the $500 would be spent.

Anyway, I sympathize with your frustration and wish you luck in getting your tractor up and running again.
