Was cutting today -- first go-around this year. In some tall grass I flushed a wild turkey off her nest right in front of the tractor. She had difficulty getting out of there with all of the cover. Made a huge racket I could hear even with the engine noise.

I backed out after taking a peek at the nest and will resume cutting this spot in a few weeks.

They can make a racket getting airborne out of brush and stuff.

I've heard some folks won't cut this time of year for that very reason. One person said he ran over a fawn.

Unfortunately I have ran over one and clipped the front leg off with the sickle bar mower. It took off, never found it of seen it again.

My friend killed one mowing. Put the eggs under my Mom's silky hen and they all hatched.

I mowed a fawn about three years ago. We didn't know until I saw what was left going into the baler pickup. The smell was awful, a cross between dead animal and spoiled milk.

Not good at all.

Well, out here where the wild turkey has been transplanted most folks are not too pleased. The turkeys are taking over the world. They are in my yard all day, eating the dog & cat food and cr--ing everywhere. It appears the coyotes have little or no affect on their numbers and I've never seen/heard of a hawk or eagle taking one on. There are multiple open seasons for turkey in the fall but their numbers are growing exponentially. I would shoot/eat them but several who have say after many, many hours cooking; old shoe leather is more tender and tasty.

I work on a naval base (Cheatham Annex) and saw one of the landscapers cutting grass around some Crepe Myrtle's....he stopped, and there was a snapping turtle that looked to be at least 24" long....lots of wildlife out there where you least expect it.
