i've been looking at a few old allis d-14,d-15 and d-17 tractors and was just wandering what anyone had to say about them. they look pretty decent and seem to operate as they should. are there any allis problems to be on the lookout for, maintenance issues, parts issues.
thanks.

As a kid, we used D-17s to run hay balers. Great tractors, good power steering, the hand clutch independent of the PTO with the high-neurtral-low made operating the baler easy. Great on gas.

Disadvantage was no 3PT. Gears weren't synchroed, so shifting was grinding all the time.

I'd like to find a D17...............

Besides the fact that most of the D series didn't have 3 pt (you could modify the Allis Coupler htich and make one), if you heavilly used the tractor for plowing/heavy ground engaging equipment you may find that it would want to "jump" out of a gear now and again. Other than that, great tractors with one of the smoothest running engines ever. BobG in VA

My dad used a D-17 for years to do everything around the farm. He got rid of it the year I was born and got the MF 35. I wish we had it now, I could really use the extra HP.

As others have said watch for the tendancy to jump out of 3rd gear on a heavily used machine. Not all came with power steering, so watch for that. I have owned: 2 D10's, 1 D12. 1 D14, 1 D15, and 3 D17's. Also check out www.allischalmers.com for info and an Allis discussion forum.

If you can get along without the 3 point...the Allis is a good tractor for the dollar. On our family farm we currently have a Allis C (it is my mowing tractor) a model B, a D17, and two D19s (one gas, one turbo diesel. In the past we also had two WD45 tractors. Lack of live power takeoff is offset somewhat by the torque amplifier used on the D series.
To Gene...some pretty nice ones there!

Thanks for the kind words. Allis started putting on factory 3 point hitches in 1961 on d-series tractors as an option rather than the snap coupler style.
