All,
I was near Jax, Fl a few weeks ago, went to a bike festival there. There were many booths set up and lots of old bikes, etc. This guy was displaying his tractor.

I talked with him a while and next thing I know, I was driving his old Allis Chalmers. I'm trying to get the video hosted...I'll post it when I do.

He restored this thing from scratch. I think he said it was a 1927, but I'll have to find the literature he gave me on it.

Pretty neat huh?

I gave him my email addy, told him if he ever sold it, give me a holler.

Nice pictures. I spent a few hours or so sitting on one of them.

Hey Egon,
I had my numbers mixed up as I was going from memory alone. I found the flyer he gave me with stats on the tractor.

His literature says it's a 1938 AC "B" model. It ran like a sewing machine. He didn't have any implements for it, he said "working" implements are a rarity and are sometimes worth more than the tractors themselves, because people put their tractors in the barn, but implements rusted away in the weather. Thus, there are more tractors than implements...makes sense to me.

It was the first one like it I had ever seen. With no implements, it would make a good conversation piece, but that's about it. Allis Chalmers got their color right though ;)

There were a couple Bs at the pulls when I was in WA and always did pretty well. They didnt look as nice as the one your sitting on.

I had that exact tractor back in 1987, ran like a clock. Was forced to sell it in a divorce. Good lawn mower when used with a belly mower. Mine was crank start only but usually fire off with one pull of the crank. Many of these (in this area) were allowed to freeze up from water getting into the exhaust and sold for junk. Only a pull tractor.

Bill,
It too was hand crank only. I never realized how dangerous cranking could be until watching him do it. If you don't have it aligned just right for proper compression, it can snap back and break your arm/hand. The "novelty" of the thing amazed me. The brakes were levers to the right and left of the driver. You reach down and pull one of them to stop. Getting in and out of the seat was a pain. Engineers didn't think about ergonomics in those days. Still, I was thrilled to drive it.

The owner told me that most everything (implement-wise) attaches to the belly.

Thanks for posting.

There's a proper and improper way to crank one (any model) also.

ALWAYS pull up on compression. That way, if it balks or backfires, it simply pulls the crank from your hand.

If you push down to crank, and it fires back, you get a broken wrist!

That was the first thing a very smart man told me on my first hand crank tractor--a 1929 McCormack Deering 15-30.

if you're interested in restoring one of those, i can put you in touch with a Kubota dealer(owned by a good friend of mine). he has this exact model on his lot that someone traded in!! its not shiny like the one in your pictures, but it does run, just needs some paint and you're ready to go!

Afternoon Podunk,
Well I gotta start by tellin you you look good on that tractor ! Well, I dont think many farmers ran their B with flip flops but who am I to say ! ;)

Anyway, 1938 it is, and being a red tractor guy it hurts me to admit it, but Allis Chalmers beat International to the punch on these cultivating tractors ! :( You see, International didnt come out with the A until 1939 ! Oh well thats history and as they say, water over the dam ! :)
