I mowed with it for about 3 months after i bought it and one day i rushed the glow plugs and flooded it. a few months later I got it to pull start and ran it for about 3 hrs and tried to key start it a few times after i shut it off and no fire. sence then I have put glow plugs, new fuel, new starter, new air filter, new high crank bat with new pos/neg cables, cleaned and tested all ele connections. tried to pull start it again the other day and a little blueish smoke came out of the exhaust and no fire. the tractor does have blowby smoke from oil fill cap(read another had smoke from the oil level stick as well but i havnt had it running to check) and it had more than usual the last time i had it running(didnt know if the more smoke was from it being flooded). I have yet to blow the fuel lines of any potential crud and double check the glow plugs. I am at least getting fuel to the pump when i bleed it. My wife just got through a stem cell transplant and is doing well, we are in the process of adding on to our house and we have a 3yr old son so picking up a wrench anymore is far and few between, but i still plan on makeing an attempt. if it is a bad engine does anyone have an idea on what i can get out of a 1979 allis chalmers 5020 FWD w/factory loader? paint and sheet metal are decent and tires a little weatherd, front tires have good tread and rear are about half wore and everything works great...when it runs. this may sound crazy but i have an allis chalmers wd with a chewed up intermediate pto gear and would strongly consider some sort of trade for a field ready wd or wd45 to replace the 5020...just an offer on the table.

I worked on bleeding the fuel lines over the weekend. i tried to bleed the high pressure lined and coulnt get fuel to draw through so I took the rear line loose and there was diesel standing on the injector. when i would crank the engine blueish black smoke would belch from the exhaust and the cap on the valve cover. I did check the glow plugs and they are working. I didnt have the time to blow air through the lines but I am curious if the injectors are clogged and what the best method for testing/cleaning them. Also, in an attempt to plan ahead I tried to locate some online but didnt have much luck. I also noticed that when i loosened the bleed screw on the fuel pump the engine would pep up for a few cranks..is that normal?

i have fuel coming all the way to the injectors so the line are ok. my next step is testing the NS switch. if the switch is ok then im going to try to pull start again (hopefully by this weekend) if i cant get it to pull start it will be for sale for parts...all or nothing. im getting pretty burned out and am about ready to move to something that starts so i can get back to mowing my field. so if anybody is interested please shoot me a cash offer or possible trade.

If it ran for 3 hours and wouldn't start back up, I would bet that the shut off is sticking. You can't 'flood' a diesel.

the guy i bought it from made that comment. he said it took him 4 days of bleeding the lines before he got it to start. it started fine up until that day i wanted to do a little mowing. did not know that a diesel couldn't flood, i just assumed if it is pumping fuel to the cylinder and not making fire it would flood. thank you for the tip, i never thought of the shut off and i will check into that. i have only worked on gas engines and bought the 5020 to learn..i just hoped it wouldn't include so many headaches. haha. i was tried bypassing the neutral safety switch (because it was a free attempt and it got that notion out of the way) and it cranked slower than usual and rough even with a full charged battery. when i let off the key it looked like the engine was kicking back a partial rev. it didn't do that the last time i worked on it. i didn't figure it would work but i cleaned all the connections and didn't make a difference. my neighbor commented on the the way the engine was acting as timing so i figured id check that too. i am getting really burned out on working on the little 5020, especially with the extreme lack of part availability, but thats what i get for not doing my homework. i have found a few gas wd/wd45 options to move on to so i can get back to keeping my field mowed because as you know grass, weeds, and brush wont wait and its starting to get out of hand.
