Alfalfa needs a moderately well drained to a well drained soil for good growth. Not sure about NC, but around here, there are not too many soil types that will grow it well. Along with a soil test, you may want to check the soil survey to see what soils you are working with for planting. If the field has not had any legumes in it before, you may also want to add an inoculant to the seed when planting. Good luck !!
