Theres no reason i cant add an air intake snorkel to a 6 wheel atv right? I was told that you can submerge a diesel/gas engine in water aslong as you have the air intake above water and the exhast out too.. is this right? The image is how id like to have it.

With a diesel engine you have a better chance of success because there is less potential for electrical problems. Really the only thing you have to worrry about is the starter and generator getting water in it. With the gas engine you have the spark plugs to worry about! What I am wondering is this. You have an ATV that will float, why are you worried about having a snokel and having the engine under water?

It was an ebay picture, i am thinking about buying one so i looked there. i never thought about the floating thing. does your principle also work on motor vehicles?

This reminds me of when I was in the Army 20years ago and asked how do I get air if I'm under water /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

They never did answer that question, but all the jeeps had the snorkel /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

All 3000 series Kawasaki Mules have a snorkel which is integral to the roll cage. One side of the cage tubing feeds down to a filter and the CVT transmission (which is sealed on a Mule). The other side's tubing feeds the engine air intake filter. Like Brent stated, if you keep your ignition and other exposed electrics out of submerged water with minimum splashing, you'll probably be okay. I'd also pay close attention to the oil filler tube and any transmission or differential vent openings. A complete submersible waterproofing might prove to be a daunting task. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have a MaxII 2-seater, from my experience you would be better served wiring some sort of small bilge pump. When ever I've been in water it seems water finds it way in, the longer your out, the more water you take on. The gasket between the upper & lower shell is a possible culprit as well as the exhaust port. If too much water gets in the belt will slip making it interesting trying to climb out of the water to say the least. Still there is nothing like it for going upstream & climbing up & over beaver dams. Few other machines will do it with 2 aboard & keep you dry.

Yep, and my brother took us through floodwaters once that was deep enough that we had water right up to the bottom of the seat cushion. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I would not have done it if I'd been driving or if it had been my machine, but it made it just fine with no apparent ill effects.

shvl73,

That sounds like it would be a fun ride /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's one downfall of my ATV's(going upstream)

I have some neighbors that would like to ride out to the beaver dams / homes and have a little talk with the destructive creatures /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I've heard of people making multiple breaks in the dam & laying 4" thin wall pipe in the direction of flow, then let the beavers repair the dam. The pipe will let water through keeping the water level from getting too high. It also seems to keep the destruction down a bit. You might still have to "relocate" a few to the hereafter every so often to keep from being overrun with the critters.

shvl73,

That is a great idea /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But not what the neighbors had in mind, they lost about 10 acres of woods out of the 160 they have, not due to high water, but lost trees. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
