Has anyone used a PEX clamp ring to repair an airline instead of a hose clamp? I never have much luck with small hose clamps and it always seams like the hose clamp gets caught on anything you drag it near. I was thinking of trying the copper rings that you just squeeze but wasn't sure if they would handle the extra psi that an air line sees. The last thing I would want would be to have an air line flopping all over the place with air shooting out of it.

I dont think it would work. The rubber air hose would compress alot more then a PEX pipe, and I dont think the ring would be able to be compressed enough.

Years ago I got a small pinhole in my main shop airhose. I cut it and inserted a clampless brass barbed hose splice and that was it...it has never leaked and has never pulled out. Looks like this...

I cut the yellow plastic collars off so it is smooth now and all you can see is the short gap between the two hose ends. It's on a 90 psi regulated airline that is constantly under pressure.

Here's a link to a website that sells them...

We use ones like that at work. Parker makes the ones we use, Push Lok, wasn't sure if they need to be used with their hose or if any hose would work. But we use them on water hoses that don't see 125 psi (or more). They don't always stay sealed but that could be from the heated water making the hose brittle.

If you look at a factory assembled air hose they must use a connector like that and then crimp a brass fitting on the outside. So I got to wondering "I wonder if I could make my own die to crimp a PEX ring (or some other sort of ring) that I could put in my 20 ton press and make sure it sealed and stay sealed.

for more secure, use a double ear oeteger (sp?) clamp.

I hate to say it but I'll probably just pick up a couple of cheap HF ones the next time I'm driving by. I'm not even sure if GoodYear makes hose in this country anymore.

HF (Or PA) in my case, hose clamps are among the worst product they sell. At least try and find a auto parts store that carries Tridon clamps (made in China now too i believe, but better quality)

The Oeteger clamps in my above post are alot like a Pex clamp, but double eared to enable a tight squeeze on flexible rubber hose. I like them because there is no annoying "tail" to scratch a vehicle or otherwise annoy you.

As far as i know, goodyear hose is still Made in USA.

If your going to go with a foreign hose, have a look at the Flexzilla hose. Ive heard great things about it. Made in Taiwan though, but thats a step up from China in my book.

On my PEX heating system I used the single pinch type rings with the inner tongue, Watts maybe. I think the PEX ones are designed to crimp the correct amount for PEX to a PEX fitting so I kind or ruled them out. I figured I could always use my 20 ton press to crimp the plain old ring style ones so they were tight.

I just hate to throw good hose away but I also hate hearing air hissing out out too.
