Ive just bought an air compressor,it was cut off a tractor, what type i dont know, its a monster of a V shaped twin cylinder pump, with oil cooling rad and fan, driven by the PTO ,via an unknown type of pulley( it didnt come with the pump), and then onto the pump pulley with grooves for 3 or 4 V belts.,its has two long tanks either side, underslung and two outlets, one with a crows foot type connector and another large push fit airline connector,it was fitted on a tractor which was used for road maintenance, for these air / jack hammers they used,so its putting out a fair amount of psi.It still has the original chassis attached where it was cut off using a cutting torch, channel sections.Ive searched the web and all i can find are small pto attachments,I would like some info on this type of machine, maybe someone will know what it is and the revs/pm i need to set it up,im reluctant to drive it off my pto ,.i have a feeling it will need high revs for long periods while im working with it.So Im thinking a stand alone engine will be more suitable.(I will post pics later, sorry I know its useless at the moment without pictures of the actual pump...)

Most pumps on your average home or shop compressor (not motor) run 450 to 600 RPM... Which is nice & close to 540 RPM.

Need photos if you want any better info.

Twin cylinder. is one larger than the other?

Yes pictures...

Ive found a tag on it that had been over painted, careful rubbing down and alittle paint stripper came up with the make and model..,its made by Bristol Pneumatics Ltd,England. With 1400RPM and 160cfm.A quick company check shows they disolved the firm in 2001..so much for a shop manual then,,any information would be helpful. Its a 6 V groove pulley(not a 4 as i said earlier),seen with hand beside it ,gives a scale of size, its quite large pump.If I could gear it with a PTO pulley so my tractor (MF 135)could run it without racing the engine Id be happy to use it that way, save me finding an engine to use on it. ladarear121 1644331695.jpg ladarear121 1644331694.jpg ladarear121 1644331696.jpg

Maybe this can help you figure how much engine (or PTO HP) you need.
Horsepower required to Compress Air
You need to know how much pressure you want at full capacity. If that thing was for jack hammers, it must have been putting out at least 100 PSI, probably more.

Kind of reminds me of an old VW Bug motor!

What are you going to do with all that air?

Jack hammer. Lot's of volume, not a lot of pressure. That looks to be a single stage compressor, 100 to 135 psi. 500 rpm or so. 1600 seems to be a lot but either way, you got lots of air.
The small drive shiv seems to indicate that this compressor was driven at a higher RPM than I would consider normal. Go for it. even if you run it too slow I think you will have a lot of air. (hot air? lol)

That is a nice size for most uses. Most air compressors that rental companies have now run 185 cfm. You can run two hammers with that. I use a very old Jeager [sp] that is 100 cfm to sandblast with. Only have seen one tractor ran unit sell at auction. It was 3pt. and PTO ran. Sold for 400.00 dollars. Cheap enough but I did not need two large compressors.

How much air delivery do you need? What is your intended use for it? Depending on your needs you might be able to turn it much slower than the max 1400 rpm and get plenty of volume.

I need 110cfm and around 100psi for my blast pot and air supply to my helmet,my old hydrovane /compair towable compressor struggled at 90cfm to run my pot alone, this one is more than capable.just dont fancy having my old tractor sitting for long periods at high revs.
