The title is what I'm interested in..without spending more than I have to.

Seems to me someone must offer something rugged enough for.. say, tree work..ie: chainsaw: enviroment. It would be nice to point out something to a worker without screaming (or throwing a stone at em';) ) It would also be nice for the wife to let me know something important when I'm in the tractor.

I know motorcycle helmets can be had with what I'm asking..but how about a set of (or three) headsets? We have small walkie talkies but they are useless in loud conditions.

Anyone use something like this?

I don't, but I've sure been looking. The latest "affordable" solution I've been thinking about is using a throat-mic and in-ear headphone that could work with a FRS radio or my 2meter/70 cm HT. I'd then put earmuffs over it to block the noise from tractors, chansaws, etc. in *my* ears.

These seem to be especially popular with hunters, tactical paintball players and motorcyclists. eBay has a bunch listed for around $25. Cabellas has one that people either seem to love or hate. Cabela's -- Fire Fox Throat Mic

A much less affordable solution are headsets designed to do exactly what you are talking about like this: 2-WAY COMMUNICATION HEADSETS Hearing Protection Buy UK

Doesn't work. Could you post specific thread links?

Well the real low budget way is to get a simple in-ear earphone($1). You plug this into the FRS radio earphone jack, and into your ear. Over this you put the ear muff protection of your choice. This allows you to hear the recieve audio from the FRS radio clearly.

For transmit in a noisy environment, find the hole in the front of the FRS radio where the condenser mic is located. Hold this area of hte radio against the front of your neck under either the left or right jawbone. This works pretty well as a throat mic and blocks out the background nboise. Depending on the radio, the person you are talking to may hear you a little muffled but it does work. I have used this method in some pretty noisy engine rooms with good results.

Do a search for hearing protection in the saftey forum. That is where most of the threads are.

Sorry the link didn't work. That has happened to me several times when I want to post a link to something in TBN.

It's looking more and more that's the way I'll go R M.:(
I'm hoping some company does (or will soon) manufacture something to fill this relatively small nich. All the technology exists..we can buy fairly good noise reduction headsets for $10.00, and we can buy a decent 2-way set for $100.00 or a little more...all it takes is someone to combine these 2 products without multiplying the cost 10 x's..
A stand alone headset/2-way radio like that one in my earlier post (thanks srjones) for $150.00 or less per unit..Why not?

but before I do anything I'll do a search in the safety forum, froggy;)
