Need some help finding an inexpensive aerator that will fit the 3 pt hitch, been researching it to death, found the Woods models and a couple others, all well over $1k. Is there an inexpensive model anyone can speak to? I do have a tow behind, problem is I can't raise it off the ground without having to jump off the tractor each time to pull the silly bar up or down. Would be willing to spend $600 - $800, having one that fills with water as the weight would be ideal as well so no fooling around w/cinder blocks that like to fall off.

I researched this to death last year.

I too just can not figure out why these things were so expensive (I am going through the same thing with after market Cabs right now). In the end my research concluded with;

1) No tow behind as you stated 3 Pt Hitch only way to go for maneuverability

2) No Drum as the spikes do not rotate individually and on turns will tear up your lawn.

3) No drum (with water fill) since the whole idea is to aerate the lawn and make it breath NOT compact it (which the drum will do!)

4) No spikes use cores for the same reason as #3

At the cost of these units I started to look for rentals - it took me a while but I finally found a tractor rental place that rents a 60 inch core aerator for $50 / day. I pick it up on a Saturday night and drop in off Monday morning (this way I have ALL sunday with it). I can not tell you how happy it made me since I really could not justify the outlay of these thing for what effectively (for me) was to be used 2 day per year (spring / fall) on only 1.5 acres of lawn.

Just my $0.02

See photos. Only get a core aerator and 3PH if you want the best and most efficient job. The ones below are used on a BX2200.

The blue one is from Corrier Equipment (now Everything Attachments). It was $400 w/free shipping about 10 years ago.

The green one is a John Deere that was $50 on eBay.

You may want to check Craigslist through SearchTempest for deals as well as eBay.

I have the turf vent 48" and I love it. I just used it yesterday.
Occasionally I use a screwdriver and hammer to knock out a piece of gravel. I bought mine from Gemplers online and I think it was $450 or so.
