Hi Everyone! This will be my first foray into tool storage/organization beyond small piles in boxes or drawers. I am getting an 18x21 metal carport with one wall fully paneled. I plan on using that side as a wall for a workbench and saws. I am considering ways to use the wall for hanging tools and clamps. Pegboard for smaller tools and pieces comes to mind, but am not sure how sturdy the pegboard will be. My posts will be approximately 5 feet apart, so horizontal supports will probably be necessary. (I am not a welder, so it will have to be bolted to the posts) I am thinking of running the pegboard between the posts with some type of zbar, angle or jbar to support the top and bottom of the board with flatbar vertically to add support between the carport posts. I am not sure what type of material will work best without welding, hoping someone has some experience and can advise. Also thinking some wood supports will make sense inside the steel framework to add stregnth to the board. I have never worked with pegboard, so I am not sure what to expect when hanging clamps, hammers, and other tools.
I also want to hang my sliding compound miter saw on the wall when not in use. it is on a Craftsman folding stand with a clamp on base. The clamp on base is designed to grab a pair of 1 1/2" pipe rails on the stand. The saw weighs 52lbs. I think I can put a couple of pipes on the wall and clamp the saw to those if I can figure a sturdy way to mount the pipe to the wall. If I put pipe clamps on the carport posts and run the pipe between it will mean a 5 foot span. that seems a little long a run for a 1 1/2" pipe supporting 52lbs.
Okay, all you more experienced do-it-yourselfers, How would you go about using this wall without creating a deathtrap? Thanks!
