Hi Everyone! This will be my first foray into tool storage/organization beyond small piles in boxes or drawers. I am getting an 18x21 metal carport with one wall fully paneled. I plan on using that side as a wall for a workbench and saws. I am considering ways to use the wall for hanging tools and clamps. Pegboard for smaller tools and pieces comes to mind, but am not sure how sturdy the pegboard will be. My posts will be approximately 5 feet apart, so horizontal supports will probably be necessary. (I am not a welder, so it will have to be bolted to the posts) I am thinking of running the pegboard between the posts with some type of zbar, angle or jbar to support the top and bottom of the board with flatbar vertically to add support between the carport posts. I am not sure what type of material will work best without welding, hoping someone has some experience and can advise. Also thinking some wood supports will make sense inside the steel framework to add stregnth to the board. I have never worked with pegboard, so I am not sure what to expect when hanging clamps, hammers, and other tools.

I also want to hang my sliding compound miter saw on the wall when not in use. it is on a Craftsman folding stand with a clamp on base. The clamp on base is designed to grab a pair of 1 1/2" pipe rails on the stand. The saw weighs 52lbs. I think I can put a couple of pipes on the wall and clamp the saw to those if I can figure a sturdy way to mount the pipe to the wall. If I put pipe clamps on the carport posts and run the pipe between it will mean a 5 foot span. that seems a little long a run for a 1 1/2" pipe supporting 52lbs.

Okay, all you more experienced do-it-yourselfers, How would you go about using this wall without creating a deathtrap? Thanks!

Pegboard does not perform well in humid environments, I'm guessing texas is humid. It's also not very good for things much larger than small hand tools. Over time the hooks and fasteners will sag as the pegboard softens and deflects. I'd put up some 3/4" plywood and then you can mount anything you want. Pound in a big nail and you can hang things on it. Or you can get fancy and buy specialty hooks for things. I also agree with lots of shelves.

Peg board just like anything comes in different grades and thickness. Go to the lumber yard and tell them what you are doing. I would look at framing up the area between the posts using a top and bottom plate with vertical 2x4 on 16 inch centers. Drop at least one leg down to the floor between the five foot span. Paint the backside as well as the front because pegboard does not like moisture. Screw and glue the pegboard onto the twobys. For your circular saw work off one of the wall supports.

Good thing to know about pegboard. I had not factored in humidity in it's performance. I am very close to a river and have slightly higer humidity than average in central Texas. Texas as a whole is not very humid, but close to coast and rivers is a different story. My area is not nearly as bad as Houston or Corpus Christi, but it can get noticable.

I like the idea of solid board and 3/4 would even support everything with minimal blocking. Is it possible to use peg hooks with a board that thick?

Also, for attaching to the steel square tube posts I am thinking some type of blind fastener. Any suggestions? expansion, molly, wedge, rivets? Any idea if one is better than another?

You can get peg board in Aluminum or steel sheets which is nice but also cost more. At some big box stores they have it in a 18" x 24" size with a the bend already around the perimeter for mounting. hutch.jpghutch 2.jpgclips.jpg

I don't like pegboard. The holes aren't always in the right spot, the hangers fall out, if you mount it to a wall you can't put anything where the studs are. I'm with BeezFun, put up plywood and then you can put nails and screws wherever you want. I use 1/2" in my garage. If you want to dress it up paint the whole thing white and draw outlines around your tools with a sharpie.

I saw, at sears, that they have the slot type boards that are t&g fit together. After messing around with peg board for years I like the look of it better and it lets you easily move tools around. Its called the "flow" wall system, but sears has its own and its cheaper, btw sears also has the metal peg board. Sears.com

I'd use self tapping sheet metal screws and a good construction adhesive like PL400 to face mount 2x2 girts to the posts. Then you can screw whatever you want to the 2x2s.
