Hello, everyone. My first post. I am new to land upkeep and tractors, although an avid hunter since childhood. Recently closed on property - a dream for some time. Bank owns 80% of it, but working steadily to reduce that. Some steep places, some hayfield, the rest is hardwoods select cut 8 years ago, a lake with potential for bass and bream, deer and turkey.
Among other tractor based tasks, road upkeep will be a big part of keeping this property in good condition. Main road about 1/2 mile long, vertical (1/4 mile up to the barn and 1/4 mile back down) and washes badly in spite of water bars and cut-outs.
Equipment: JD 5083e, FEL, brush cutter and a Cammond 7 foot box blade. Thanks to advice others posted on this website, I put a TNT and a quick hitch on the tractor. Slowly getting used to it - lots of fun, and very therapeutic as all of you know.
My question: I have the opportunity to purchase a used Land Pride RB3572 in very good condition for $500. This blade is 72 inches wide, and the JD 5083 is about 6 feet 6 inches wide. I need advice please on the "fit" of this blade with this tractor. Should it extend a foot or so wider on either side, especially for ditching or is this a reasonably correct width ? I have read many posts on TBN on the merits of grader versus box blade - seems that both have their place in the scheme of things and this may be a good way to learn this for myself.
The owner wants an answer soon about the blade. If it is a reasonable fit for the tractor and a good price, I would probably grab it. Am I thinking correctly, or is this just another toy that I need to invent a use for? Thanks for any advice. What an asset this website has been for me!
