I need to replace the waterpump on my uncles old Ford 8n. I've never worked on one before, and thought I'd ask if there are any tricks or tips, or if it's pretty straight forward...

No problem, you don't even have to remove the radiator if your careful.

Hey ToadHill,

When looking at the WaterPump on the side is there any clearance to get the fan out. On my 9n and 2n I found it was easier to empty the fuel and pull the hood and loosen the radiator bolts, this let me lean her out of the way to pull the fan off. Hope this helps.

Unless you got huge hands.. you can do this with all the sheet metal on in a couple hours of leisure work.. just have the right water pump and gasket and tools on hand and go for it.. replace the belt and hoses and thermostat in the top hose while you have it down.. good time to renew coolant if it hasn't been done in a few years.

I think if you drained the gas, REMOVE the battery and remove the hood, you will loads of room to replace waterpump and the others that Soundguy metioned, re-install and you should have it all done and running in a short afternoon.

Good Luck!!

Why pull the battery? battery box doesn't have to come out to pull the hood/doglegs.. only has to come out to pull the dash and steering box..

Clearance for the fan is tight but with care you can slide it out the left side.

Our 8N's dont have a battery box, just a square bracket around the top that holds the battery in place. I tried to pull the hood off one time w/o disconnecting or removing the battery and the hood came down on the battery and started arching- next to the gasoline tank. I learned quickly it was easier to remove the battery than to put on a spark show with a gas tank, and to ask for help removing the hood.

Hmm.. then there has been some SUPER custom work done on your 8n.. ALL 8n;'s had a battery support that was integral to the dash support.. in fact.. when disassembling to get to the steering box, you MUST remove the hood first.. then the battery box support.. then the dash and cowling can be removed.

to not have that.. there must have been some serious torch and cobble work done to your machine.

Remember.. I'm not talking about a battery cover.. but rather the shelf the battery sets in.
