Adjusting grease gun coupler

I'd like to narrow the aperture of the grease coupler at the end of my grease gun's hose so it will fit the zerks better. Mine has a knurled area near the tip, but I have not been able to turn it without having the pliers slip (with a wrench holding the nut at the other end so I don't remove the coupler from the hose). I'm beginning to wonder if my coupler is adjustable. It's the stock coupler that came with an Alemite 585 grease gun. Could someone look at the pic and let me know if it's adjustable, and what the technique is to adjust it? Thanks.

Yes sir, it is adjustable and you should be able to turn the end of it by hand while holding the hex fitting at the rear of the coupler (not the hose). If I were you, I'd simply unscrew it all the way and remove it; i.e., take it apart, make sure it's clean and lubricated and put it back together. You might have to hold that hex fitting with a wrench and use pliers to unscrew it. Just off hand, the only reason I can think of for that not to fix it woudl be if someone has taken it apart before and cross threaded it putting it back together.

The tip that came on my cheapo pneumatic gun wouldn't fit tight enough on the fittings. I went to an auto parts store and bought a new tip. The new one works great and adjusts easily. If all else fails, a new tip is about $5.00.

Thank you, gentlemen. I've adopted both suggestions -- removed and cleaned the old coupler, and purchased a new one for a spare.

There's no problem too big or too small for TBN!

At least yours had/has a hose!! Some of the guns just come with a short piece of pipe, that can be real fun
