Has anyone used this product? I've got a privacy fence around part of my property and it has 2 2 panel gates on it, one on each side of the house. I had to do an emergency replacement on one of the panels a few weeks ago and purchased one of the 2 rail systems. It went up great, is very sturdy and looks good. The only problem is that the instructions say that it is designed to open inwards. I really need it to open outwards since when it opens to the inside it blocks me getting equipment around because I've got my 16' trailer parked straight in from the gate. I didn't even think about this until I started to put it up but when we were doing it we had a storm headed our way and I needed to get it done.

Does anybody have any ideas on getting the gate to swing outward? It swings that way just fine until you put the last dog ear panel on it.

Thanks,

Mike

Just guessing - can you switch posts it hangs on? Wouldn't that make it open to the outside then?

Interesting product.

Here are a couple of ideas.

  • Cut the last boards on the gate and post at a 45 degree angle. Would that give you enough?
  • Add a longer hinge pin on the POST. This would space it far enough out that the gate could turn 90 degrees without hitting the post. Your gap would have to be equal to the distance from the center of the hinge to the front of the gate.
  • Make custom L-Shaped Hinges to bring the hinge out to flush with the outer edge of the gate. This would likely work best, but would likely require some cutting and welding.

Sorry, I'm not following you. Switch posts?

- Hadn't thought about cutting at a 45. Might work.
- I did think about this. Wondered how it would work
- I had thought about getting some heavy duty gate hinges from someplace like Tractor Supply. I'll look at that and see what I can find. If nothing else, my wife works for a sheet metal company that bend, cut, beat, or weld just about anything metal. I'll ask them too.

just got a reply from the company that makes Adjust-A-Gate:

Mike;

You will need to install the post hinge approximately 1" from the front of your hinge post.

NOTE:
1) Your locking latch will be expose to the outside
2) When installing your fence boards, you will need to allow enough space at the hinge to allow the gate to swing open. Otherwise your gate will bind.

Thank you,

If you use a strap hinge, you should be able to flip it so that the loop faces the front of the gate. If the strap is 1/4" thick, you may need to add a spacer for the rest of your boards.

Then, when installing the peg portion into the post, put it at an angle so that it goes towards the middle of the post, but the hinge pin would be in the appropriate place.
