Just bought a used trailer 16-ft with wood floor. Moved my scut using chains and straps, but had to anchor chain to the side rails because the trailer does not have tie-down rings installed. I'm looking to add about four recessed rings, and wonder if I need to get the kind where I'd remove some wood and set the thing into the recess, and if I need to add a backing plate to the underside to bolt through. Or would it be ok to just bolt through the wood plank floor?

IMHO you should secure your tractor using the steel side rails or weld some outer rings on the FRAME. When push comes to shove, for heavy equipment, recessed rings in wood with backing plates is rinky dink. The recessed rings are fine for some stuff but not this application.

Lots of people don't know about these. Weld to the inside of the trailer frame.

It must be connected to steel. Wood will not do.

Can you weld or bold to the side frame? My trailer has simple "U" shaped pieces of steel welded to the side frame front/back on both sides, and they work out well.

+1 to this. I have a wood floor, but I cut through it and mounted the tie downs to the underlying metal frame. Even then I didn't trust my welds, so I added bolts for extra measure. Those tractors are darn heavy.

Our trailer has 4 loops (made from round rod) that are welded to the lower rail (the one that the wood floor sits on) that we fasten to. Works very well for us.

my smaller 5x10 trailer had those metal loops on the sides in a couple of places, but this 16' dble axle has nothing. it does have stake pockets, but I didn't think they'd be very strong anchor point... think i'll try those Chain Tie-Down items listed above, bcp; I use this to move my 2305 and/or Ranger sxs for service, mostly, so it'll be infrequent, but I wanted to be safe. the bed tie downs mentioned in hslogger's post was what I thought I'd do, they have a 5,000 lb rating. rethinking the plan. thanks for the input!

of course, I don't weld, so the hardware options mentioned above will be the cheap part of this journey...
