add brakes to old axle?

is it possible to add brake flanges to an existing axle?
I have an older 3000 or 3500 lb trailer that really should have brakes, but there is no flange. Is there a way to do this that's relatively painless or should I just get a new axle?

You can get the 4 hole sguare flange that you weld on for about 17 bucks. That's the local price here. A new axle will set you back about 200 bucks. But if you don't have access to a welder that would be the way to go. If you go with welding a flange on just do a mach up with the brake hub and tack it in place before you weld it out. The trick is to weld it on in the right spot so your drums just clear the backing plate. I'd suggest buying all the parts in advance so you can position it correctly. Eastern Marine sometimes has some good deals on brakes. Also Southwest

The guys have covered it well. Just be careful when doing the welding not to put too much heat on it.

Just heat in general. The spindles are tempered but you would really have to screw up to damage them.
