I have a Husky Haulmaster that was built with a 16hp Vtwin. We ran it out of oil, purchased a greens mower at auction that had a 18hp Vtwin and swapped it out. Always had trouble keeping the Briggs running right, carb problems. Finally bought a chinese Honda clone, 16hp, rigged it in the utv. What a difference!! The clone has at least twice the performance of either one of the Briggs, and they're cheap. I say junk the Briggs.

I was production line supervisor for Pug on the w570 line. we made a change in clutches from the Hilliard clutches (torque converters / infinite variable speed clutches) to Hoffco / comet clutches in 2002. The belt length also changed and if you bought your Pug used someone may have changed the clutches but did not adjust the belt tension properly. The engine mounting holes are slotted for this purpose. At low idle the drive clutch (on the engine crankshaft) should not turn the belt. When rpm's reach 600-700 the drive clutch sheaves should start to close tightening the drive belt and in turn engage the driven clutch on the trans axel to move the unit. the more engine rpms applied by accelerator pedal the closer the sheaves on the drive clutch come together and the driven clutch sheaves spread apart. if the belt tension is not proper at low idle your belt will experience slippage to whatever degree your belt is out of proper tension. you will have to play with engine adjustment until the clutches perform as described.

FYI, your engine is not really a Briggs and Scrapiron, it is a Briggs Vangard. this engine is built by the vanguard company in Japan who sold out to Briggs and Scrapiron, but B&S new better than to eliminate the "Vangard" name so as not to give it an emidiate failure in the industry. I'll put the Vangard up against any Kohler Command or Kawasaki FX series anytime. I personally own a Pug W570A with over 1800 hours and have had zero trouble except with the voltage regulator on it. Your problem in not the engine.

I don't see much info about Pug W570A anywhere. See your post from many years ago and I'm wondering what kind of luck you have had with it and if you are glad you bought it. One is for sale locally and it looks interesting. Owner says it hasn't been run in a couple of years and currently doesn't start. Asking price is $2000.
Probably most I would offer is $1500. I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks
