I've built 3 front end loaders for my tractors. Fixing to build the 4th loader. I have always used hoses going from the hydraulic cylinders to the valve that were "Parker" 3/8 hose rated at 5100 psi. I would like this next loader to have more of a professional look to it using pipe or tubing, instead of hoses draped over the boom and zip tied to it. I realize that schedule 40 pipe is only rated for 400 psi. My question is what is the difference in pipe compared to the tubing that I see on commercial front end loaders. There tubing is tiny and seems to be fragile. As to Pipe seems to be tuff and durable. Would sch. 40 pipe work? I'm not forsure what kind of pressure I am putting through the lines I have never checked it before. Any thoughts or knowledge would be appericiated.

Schedule fourty pipe will not work.

The steel tubing for hydraulic service
will be rated for 5-6,000 pounds as rule.

Not 100% sure but I think hydraulic tubing has no seems like brake lines do, also be aware that regular hydraulic rated steel tubing does rust.

SCH 40 pipe is the wrong stuff to use. It's not rated for that kind of pressure, nor is it manufactured to the same tolerances as steel hydraulic tubing. As another poster said, it also has a seam, while hydraulic tubing does not.

The same goes for fittings. Just because you can get NPT fittings at any hardware store does not mean they are to the same tolerances, cleanliness and material specs as NPT hydraulic fittings.

Go to the Parker Hannifin site and download catalog 4300 as it is a wealth of information.

If you do use pipe, then use sched 80 seamless.....thicker wall w/ higher burst pressure rating...

But heavy wall hyd tubing is best

Do you have the equipment to bend hydraulic tubing? If not again Parker Hannifan will have the tubing benders, clamps, etc. to make this look professional.

Not sure what size loaders you are building but if you have used 3/8" ID hose you will probably want to use 1/2" tube to get the same approximate ID for flow. The link below will give you an idea on pressure ratings and flow rates.

As others have already mentioned, you need hydraulic tubing for this. Schedule 40 pipe may look rugged, but it will not handle the operating pressure of your hydraulics.

Your best source for this tubing is probably a local hydraulic repair service.

If you need a tube bender, you'll be hard pressed to find a better bargain than these on eBay. One is for 1/2" hydraulic tubing. The other will bend 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8" tubing.

If you plan to use JIC 37° flare fittings, you will also need a flaring tool. We have a few available here.

If you want to avoid the time and expense of flaring, you may want to consider flareless compression tube fittings.

Whatever you decide, good luck with your project and let us know how it comes out.
