as a 51 year old I am getting invitations to join AARP. If only I were a "retired person"! My question- can anyone out there tell me if there are many perks to being a "junior senior citizen"?

I joined when I turned 50. Most hotels and many other businesses offer AARP discounts of 10% or more. Right after I got it, my wife and I went to Hawaii, stayed at the Marriott Maui, $130 night instead of the regular rate of $250. :D But the last time I checked, they did not offer that any more.
Many businesses offer "senior discounts" by age of 60, 62, 65, etc. rather than AARP member. So you have to kind of watch who offers what.

Membership dues are very cheap, so I've been a member for 17 years. Membership includes a magazine and a Bulletin, each of which sometimes has some interesting articles. I wear hearing aids and haven't found anywhere else I can get my hearing aid batteries as cheap as I can from the AARP Pharmacy. The last time I insured a mobile home, the AARP insurance was the best deal I found (unfortunately, their auto insurance and homeowners policy premiums on a site built house were not as good). And now, through the city from which I retired, I have the AARP Medicare supplement plan.

I'm only 26 years old and I get the invitation in the mail about once a year for the last 5 years or so.

Afternoon Goaliedad,
I have been getting them for years. My wife who is younger than me shhh 53,;) , joined a couple of years ago. So if there are any perks, I hop on her bandwagon, that way it doesnt cost me anything ! :)

Scotty, I joined when I turned 50. My wife is about 4 years younger than I am, but when she turned 50, they sent her a membership card, too. In other words, we're both listed as members, but with the same membership number. Kind of like AAA, I guess.:D

Very few people can retire at 50 or even 60,and if they can,,they got enough money aarp don't mean anything to them anyways.
So,,they might as well lower it on down to 26,,they'd surly get more members,,,maybe change the name to american working people ***..every thing boils down to money,,its putting money in some peoples pockets,,they probably spend half that money in advertising. thingy

Take a look at their advertising rates! $446,700.00 for a full page color ad for just one month. $1.2 million a year just from one advertiser.

If they sell a 1/6th page ad that's only $111,680.00 or $677,080 per page.

The 3 covers total about $1.6 million.

I have not seen the magazine in awhile but if they have 15 total ad pages plus covers they are taking in over $9,000,000.00 per month in advertising just from the magazine. They also have web advertising.

AARP is NOT a democratic membership organization! My wife is a member but I will not join because of some of their policies plus they have too many things they are trying to sell you.
