Here my question.

Is the viscosity of the new diesel low enough to cause the original injector pump on my L260 to not pump up enough pressure to function properly?

I'm now down to the point of rebuilding the pump if that what it needs but I'd rather apply a fuel treatment if possible.

I have no air leaks, clean fuel, and the engine will run on WD40 sprayed into the breather.

Anybody had this problem?

No, no and trying to "thicken up" the fuel with an additive is not a solution(pun).

My old truck driving buddy said use some automatic transmission fluid would work.

I'm game for anything that will work.

Have you ruled out everything else in the fuel delivery system?

Running on WD40 sprayed in the intake doesn't necessarily mean injector pump...I'm assuming you have additional reasons to suspect the pump...

Mixing ATF with diesel wouldn't be something I'd try...

I gone all the way to feeding fuel into the pump directly.

Replaced the lines, and drained the tank. All I can come up with is the fuel has changed.

We got the tractor with a full tank and added periodically but didn't use it much.

As we put in new fuel it because harder to start to the point we're at now.

No start art all.

On Benzes, there are some little o-rings in the connections of the lines going to each cylinder. These rings have deteriorated on some engines with ULSD and/or biodiesel.

My neighbor's old JD (about a 1972) developed an injector problem. Think it was some o-rings in it that needed replacement.

My 1983 Benz diesel runs fine on ULSD. Getting at or very near 30 mpg every tankful.

Doubt the actual viscosity of diesel has changed. Some think that the sulfur compounds were offering some lubrication. Doesn't really make sense.

Two things; ULSD doesn't have the lubricating properties of earlier fuels, so it is possible that running it (without additional lubrication) could damage pre-ULSD injector pumps. Also, ULSD can deteriorate o-rings and seals on some older engines. This might be your problem. If you have parts diagrams or a service manual, look at seals and o-rings in the pump and injectors. Of course, best thing would be to pressure test pump and injectors...

I know this is too simple to be the case, but you said you changed the lines, drained the tank, etc,.....but did you change the fuel filters???Many times thats the issue...sounds like no fuel is getting to the pump...BobG in VA

Rather than use ATF, use 2 cycle oil. Mix it at 30:1 to see if it is a viscosity or lubricity issue. Many folks run 2 cycle in new common rail systems at 128:1 or even 256:1 (1 or 1/2 oz per gallon) normally to improve lubricity. It is engineered to burn without residue, unlike ATF...

When I had my 82 chevy diesel whenever I changed the fuel filters I'd fill the filters with ATF. Couldn't tell the difference between ATF and diesel as far as performance. When I talked to several diesel mechanics they were in pretty much agreement that using atf was a good idea to increase the life of an injector pump. After 400,000 miles I couldn't agree more.
