We sell sweet corn along a busy highway about 3 miles from our place and also take orders from a small newspaper ad. My wife and I pick early in the morning, usually about 500-600 ears, I then haul the corn to our location and begin meeting customers.
We enjoy the work and I especially like meeting the folks who purchase the corn. Most are very polite and seem to appreciate good fresh local corn.

Hey Oleozz,

I admire that! Can't get any fresher than that and it's a good way to make a few new friends!

How many acres of corn did you plant, and what kind is it? Did you plant anything else? Pretty interesting!

Yep, Oleozz, that's a fine looking crop. I'm not sure what part of PA you're in, but we spent about 4 months in an RV on the highway just south of Sayre, PA, in the Spring and Summer of 1993. And some folks who lived on the highway just north of us did what you're doing, except they were just selling in their own front yard, with the corn growing behind the house, and we sure did get some fine corn from them, and at a very good price.

Redbug---I honestly don't know how many acres, not more than 4. Our ground is ideal for corn growing, very flinty. I also plant soybeans, about 9 acres of those and next year will have more under cultivation.
Bird----My wife grew up close to Sayre, nice country with beautiful farms.
Mark-----The 45 is used every day for the corn operation, it carts the produce pallet around. It has saved us a lot of work.
Bill----Thanks. We try to keep our prices reasonable and everybody gets two extra ears in every dozen. I'm sure no saint but I like to treat folks the way I would want to be treated.

I live right on Rt. 15 which of course goes right through Gettysburg. There are many folk that do the exact same thing. My neighbor runs a large 900 acre farm with beef herd, hay, etc. But he makes his money doing produce. He has nice road side stand the has corn, veggies, fruit, pies, etc. He gets all the daily traffic heading back into MD. and PA. On weekends the place is packed.

Do you have any problem with deer eating the corn?

Charles,

Boy, you just hit the nail right on the head. I have 3 rows of corn and each 100 feet with the rows spaced about 16". The darn deer have totally decimated my crop, not even one ear to be had:mad: I reckon have I'll have corn fed venison come December. I've got five tags.

Jc,

Hey Oleozz great job, I wish i knew your secret.

Raccoons is the reason I gave up trying to grow corn. 2 years in a row without even getting one ear and we gave up. Tried hanging human hair, music playing, electric fence, everything and nothing worked. Finally gave up and corn is bringing $5 per dozen this year and isn't fit to eat.
