970 JD & 1070 JD
Just got scammed on 1070... lm going to need a lot of help...
Thought it was a deal but now l think the clutch is bad.
Takes off slow in low and mid gear and barely takes off at all in
High range and the pto kicks out when mowing.
I shouldn't have bought this without learning more about it.....
I have a 950 JD but its like a 78-80 model and no loader anyway l
Need manuals Pdf's info friends with knowledge. ... anything and everything.... this is going to be a long project but l am going to
Make this tractor earn its keep eventually!

THANKS IN ADVANCE... oh and lm a new member here too!

:welcome: to TBN
You will find good help here, so stick with TBN.

Make good use of the search engine here. Top right box there is "Google Custom Search". Click on that and enter the problem.
As well, look at "similar threads" shown on bottom of your posts.

And don't be hesitant about asking questions.

What have you done about fluids? and filters? It's a good way to start.. Getting a pressure gauge is another way to check out what oil pressures you have..

Keep in close touch... there are several very knowledgeable TBN members with vast experience wrenching on Deere's

Well, both operators and service manual can be obtained through John Deere for about maybe 30-40 dollars per manual.
It is a good investment to have the manuals. Not much help on the clutch situation, except that if it needs replaced you literally have to split the tractor in half. As for your pto, it might be a slide collar. Mine does the same thing on my massey ferguson. Agco dealer didn't put it together right or something and they won't stand behind their work. They pretty much said it was probably the slide collar. Hope this helps and welcome to the site.

So far l have just checked fluid levels (all good). I just got it home right before dark and l will be checking it out more tomorrow. The main problem is l dont know anything about this kind of tractor. Its way different from my older 950 (tested tough gear driven beast for just 29hp)

Thanks ... l will look for that collar tomorrow. ... the pto really feels like that might just be some kind of adjustment. Time will tell.

The slide collar is internal is my understanding. According to my dealer, you have gears, ring and pinion, the pto shaft itself, the slide collar and clutch packs. It is a major job to tear into the pto assembly. Sorry for the bad news and I hope yours is something simple and easy.

I had the 1070's smaller brother; a 970 for nearly 6, trouble-free years. Easy to work on, straight-forward diesel tractor!

Both the main clutch and the pto are adjustable. The clutch is a 2-stage engaging clutch with the upper limit of pedal travel engaging the engine and transmission. The bottom limit of the pedal travel is to engage or disengage the pto.

In the short term, while you're shopping around for an owner's manual and the Technical Repair Manual (highly recommend) check the Deere website for the possibility of downloading a *.pdf copy of the Owner's Manual.

I've purchased a dozen or more JD manuals over the years on eBay.

Last, but not least, check with your local dealer. They might have an old, moldy copy stashed in the Service Managers office!

I would suggest to check clutch pedal free travel. Manual on CD-ROM are usually cheaper than on paper. If you desire paper type just remove the "CD" from the manual number.

Technical Manual CD-ROM """"TM1470CD"""" 670, 770, 790, 870, 970 and 1070 Compact Utility Tractors English

Is it a dealer or an individual? If you're worried about it and have the ability to do the work, have him get you the parts and do the work yourself.

You say you got scammed, were you lied to? Statements in ads like "good condition" can mean vastly different things to different people, so you have to ask a lot of questions to get an objective measure of condition. I'm surprised the PO would offer to change the clutch for free. If anything I'd expect him to offer you your money back unless you overpaid in the first place or there aren't many buyers in your area.
