97 honda 300 4x4 starter question

I purchased a reman starter for my 97 honda 300 4x4 to replace the old starter that had locked up. I installed the new starter last night and all it will do is spin the gears and flywheel but will not engage the motor. The starting clutch was working fine before the switch. The bike will also run fine when kick started. Is it possible the starter is spinning in the wrong direction? The fellow I bought it from said a starter can be built to spin clockwise or counter clockwise. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

just reverse the wires and see what happens.

problem solved he sold me the wrong starter...my 4 wheeler requires a counter clockwise spinning starter b/c the starter clutch engages the flywheel when the flywheel spins clockwise only
