Guys,

I've been operating my 955 on some slopes and had what I would call a "puckering" incident. This now has me a little nervous, to say the least. So, I was thinking of turning the wheels around to the widest setting. Based on my measurements, it looks like the wheels are currently set on the narrowest setting right now. Since the wheels are loaded, I want to be sure before I set off to wrestle them I also saw something on here that mentioned if stems were pointing out then is wasn't on a widest setting, do I have that right? I've attached a picture, if that helps.

Thanks.

Bob

Technically speaking, you don't turn the wheels around, you swap them from one side to the other side, to keep the tread going in the same direction. If I had to guess, and going by the picture, it looks to me like it could already be set to the widest position?? It's not real easy to tell for certain though.

See if you can measure from the point where the rim bolts to the axle hub (the flange), to the edge of the rim itself. Do this on both sides of the tire, as best you can anyway. You'll need something like a 24" long piece of wood centered across the lip of the rim to use as the reference point (kind of hard to explain that but hope you get the idea).

If the way it is now has the least amount of offset, then I think it is at the widest setting.

Thanks Kebo. I did that measurement this morning and it looks like the distance from the flange to the edge of the rim is around 7" on the inside and 4" on the outside. That's why I was thinking it was on the narrow setting now. However, given how much the wheel extends past the fender, I'm not so sure. That's why I was asking about whether or not the valve stem would point inside/outside. Man, I hate to swap the wheels only to find out that it was right before.

Thanks for all the help.

If those rims are like the one's used for the turfs, the valve stem on the inside is the wide position. The way the center is dished in the top pic, I'd almost guess they are in the narrow position.

Same with the R4s on my 3720. Wide stance = valve stems inside.

Ok. Thanks guys. I'll be out of town next week so I'll give it a try after that and let all you know.

The 955 manual says the tractor width (with turf tires) is 50.2 inches on narrow, and 58.9 inches on the wide tire setting.

There's your answer. Right now the wheels stick out 4" beyond the axle flange and stick in 7". If you swap them, they'll stick out 7" and stick in 4" for a total of 6" wider.
