955 engines - Options????

I just bought a 1990 955 project tractor. I was looking it over last night when I noticed the engine data plate. Everything I have been able to find shows that the 955 was only offered with the Yanmar 3TN84RJ 87cu.in.(1.42L) 33hp diesel engine. The data plate on my engine says it's a 3TNE88-ECS 100cu.in.(1.642L) 36hp diesel engine. Was this ever an option or special order item? or is it most likely a transplant?

All my technical manuals show the only engine that was ever available for the 955 was the 3TN84RJ. I do not remember there being any options for that. I would say for sure it was a transplant. The 3TNE88 was used on the 4410.

Yeah, there is another data plate on the engine that I did not see the other day. It says that the engine meets 1999 EPA emissions standards, so I guess it's a 1999 engine. I don't think the 4410 came around until 2002 and it's 3TNE88 was a different displacement and different hp rating according to Tractordata.com. It's predecessor, the 4400, used the 3TNE88, but again it was a different displacement and rated output than the plate on this engine.

Valpadana 1640 use it as well, but again, different specs.

The only tractor I've found so far that used this engine with the displacement and output specs on this engine was a Landini Mistral 40.

I'll have to call Yanmar and see if they can run the model and serial number to see if I can find out where it came from.

Meeting 1999 specs may only mean it was built on or after 1999, Both the 4400 and 4410 use your engine with the same displacement as yours, 1.642 liters. Spec sheets attached, and links to Yanmar data pages shown.

Good to know. I found different specs, but I don't trust the source to be totally accurate as I've found other errors in their data as well.

Talked to Yanmar today. I told the local distributor that I was trying to ID the engine to see where it came from and if there were any contractual obligations on that engine as far as obtaining parts. The distributor placed a call to Yanmar and return a call to me telling me that this engine is not under any contractual obligations and any Yanmar distributor could sell me parts for it.
