Book values are a good starting point but the fact remains its 20 years old and 2 wheel drive.

Diamondpilot:
Exactly--you're right, for most people. But for me, the negatives you highlight are actually positives. I can work on it (only a rudimentary scan tool required) and I won't have any problems doing brakes, etc..., that are associated with having to remove the front hubs on a 4x4. Let alone the expense of maintaining a 4x4 (frozen front U-joints being just one such example). I drove a 2x4 for 20+ years (with STUDDED SNOWS) then I got the big, bad F-250 "Heavy Duty" 4x4, Supercab/8' box.
Result:
Unlike with the 2x4 F-150, with studs, where I could just "walk off" my frozen lawn, with the F-250 and "all seasons," I had to:
a) Fail to move, as it "settled in" an inch, overnight.
b) Put it in 4x4 low
c) GET OUT, and lock in both hubs
d) GET IN, and drive it 40'
e) GET OUT, and unlock the hubs
f) Take it out of 4x4
g) Kneel down (in the snow), and look at front drive shaft (to see it's position--"4x4" indicator light never worked--not that I'd have trusted it, anyway)
h) GET IN, BACK UP, and hope the hubs disengaged.
i) GET OUT, kneel down, and make sure the front drive shaft hadn't moved from when I last looked at it (proving that it is truly out of 4x4).
With the 2x4 it was:
a) Get in, start engine
b) Select 1st, and be on my way.
Obviously, DP, I could have studded the F250--but that's pricey (two sets of wheels and tires to buy and store).
Obviously, 4x4 always wins, if the conditions are bad enough.
But oddly enough, in 30+ years of driving in snow country (up near Canada, for much of it), I never needed 4x4. (
In pilots' terms, I guess you could say I prefer taildraggers...").
I think 4x4 is NECESSARY, in a "bug out" vehicle. But that's not what I'm shopping for right now.
To myyaz33:
First, I'm sorry to hear about your knee--I've had a similar condition, so I can relate. It sucks when things don't seem to get better, but I hope you find help.
I'm looking, HARD, for a truck like that, so let me ask you a few questions:
1. Is it the 4.9/300 cu. in. straight six?
2. You say it's a "manual"--is it a 5 speed? (It has to be, but just making sure).
3. Is it an 8' box?
4. Does it have A/C?
5. Does the A/C work?
I am so disgusted with the modern pickup truck choices (Fords blowing spark plugs out of their heads, for 8+ model years, etc...), I'd be interested in learning more about your truck. I have enough garage space (in our new place) to guarantee it wouldn't sleep outside, too.
Please feel free to PM me, with pics, etc..., if that's possible.
Thanks.
