Depending on what series and how old you're looking at, the older 492-596 tractors were a good basic tractor. They're nice, you're getting good power without all the electronics. I've run round baler & square baler on them. They have good speed selections for that.

The 5400's are a nicer full feature tractor if you're looking for something a bit nicer. I have a 5400 and have run a few others. The new Dyna-4 is an awesome transmission for baling, loader work just about anything.

Both run the Perkins & are pretty good on fuel.

I've got a MF5455 too. I like it a lot but really wish I had got the steep nose as I have a loader on it. If you are using it as a chore tractor and are off and on frequently, I'd look at one of their smaller frame 90 hp machines. Its 3 steps up to the cab and a tall unit.

They are starting a baby 55 series soon, about 2/3 the size and weight. Less expensive. Aimed at haying/beef guys.

Visibilty on the steep nose is unreal. Like there isn't even a nose there.

Any more info on the new series?

Will the 55 series be an additionn to the line up? I heard rumblings of a 5600 series that will replace the 5400 series?

Its hard to know the numbers but the new baby 5400's have the same 5400 numbering in europe, but infill lower numbers that weren't there so the 5435 and 5445 are joined by the 5425 etc. It seems like a bad idea to have overlapping numbers in the same series so I don't know what they will do here. Maybe they will discontinue the 5435 so its less confusing as the hp rating won't be sequential.

I agree with Mr. MFRED's comments. I've got a 593 just slightly smaller than the 596 and have had good luck with it. Those Perkins engines are dependable. Have a cab model, and as stated is a good basic machine.

Have heard good things from some friends that have a 5400's, they really like the Dyna-4 transmission. Having driven them a couple times I really like that transmission as well. I would probably have a 5400 except for the cost.

Noticed the three steps like Mr. slowzuki when getting in the 5400 cab. That didn't bother me to much, as usually I'm in the cab for several hours for each outing. If I was getting in and out a lot, my knees would let me know.

Got a 5455 with the 16 speed speedshift. Like the tractor very much. Plenty of weight, dependable Perkins engine, good hydraulics. Lots of electronics but easy to operate once you get the hang of it.
