I've had a YM2220D for several years and want to replace severely checked/cracked 9.5-22 rice tires (R2's ?) with a less aggressive tread (Hopefully to smooth the ride and reduce wifely complaints about tractor tracks across the yard.). The mounted wheels are 22" rims and tires that were on the tractor when I bought it, but all the literature says the rear tires should be 9.5-24 deep lug and the fronts should be 6-14 deep lug. My fronts are the 6-14's that were on the tractor when I bought it, but look to be R1 tread - at least they aren't nearly as deep lugged as the rears.

I'm cognizant of the need to match rolling circumference of the front and rear tires with the 4WD gearing ratio, and I've noticed no problems in that respect with the current setup. Perhaps the rolling circumference of the smaller diameter deeper lugged rears are compatible with the proper diameter shallower lugged fronts. If that's the case maybe I'm asking for trouble mounting 9.5-22 R1 or R4 on my current rims and retaining the 6-14's on the front.

I'm somewhat uncertain about where to go from here. I'm leaning toward replacing the 22" rear rims with 24" rims and tires since that's what the manuals say should be on this tractor. But, there doesn't seem to be a great surplus of Yanmar 24" rims so identification of any compatible rims would be appreciated. Current rims are 6 hole, ~5.5"/140mm bolt circle, ~3.75"/95mm center hole - measured with a tape measure of questionable accuracy.

If anyone out there has any comments or advice, please weigh in. All will be appreciated.

Are the rear rims solid, or two-part center/rim? If two-part, that might expand the range of what you can do.

Take a look at my sig photo, below. The YM240 has oversize Kubota rims (orange) on Yanmar centers (black). I don't think Kubota centers fit Yanmar hubs however.

The rear rims are solid.

My research shows 9.5-24s between 123 & 124 rc. 9.5-22s at 117 rc. 6-14s at 77-77.4 rc. Just picking a drive ratio out of the air not knowing what your 2220 is we will use 1.65 front to rear.

Using the 9.5-24s at 124" and the 6-14s at 77.4 we would come up with a 2.99 front lead which would be great.

Using the 9.5-22s at 117" and the 6-14s at 77.4 we would come up with a 9.15 front lead which should be turning up dirt.

Don't know this is worth anything. My experience has shown it difficult to come up with the front to rear ratio on these Grey's. Therefore, I have concluded staying with original size is a good idea.

I own a ym220/226 repair manual. I just had a look in it. Both the geared 220D and the power shift 226D are shown to run 9.5-24s and 6-14s. The front to rear drive ratio for the 220D is shown to be 1.603 to 1. The front to rear drive ratio for the 226D is shown to be 1.743 to 1. If you do the math on these figures neither one comes in at the recommended 1 to 4% front wheel lead with a wear limit of 0 to 6%.

226D would show 8.8 to 1 lead. 220 D would show .058 to 1 lead which would be close to acceptable.

... Therefore, I have concluded staying with orginal size is a good idea.

Thanks for the data. I agree that "staying with the original size" is the best approach. In my case, I believe that means reverting to the 24" wheels. Perhaps the change to 22" occurred during reassembly of a containerized shipment, or for some other unknown reason; it really doesn't much matter. I originally purchased the tractor from a small outfit which now seems to be out of business, so information or help from that corner isn't very likely. Search via the internet hasn't found evidence of any available 24" wheels this side of the ocean, so they will probably have to come from a salvaged tractor. Any leads would be appreciated.

Try this guy Raffi near Portland Oregon. He apparently has a salvage yard with several Yanmars, Kubotas, etc.

All I know is I've seen his listings on Craigslist for several years. I don't know anyone who has dealt with him. Anyone who has, please describe what you found.

One of his CL ads lists a salvage YM240 which would be 24" wheels.

Hoye, Southern Global, would be another couple of places to try.

Tom, If you don't mind coming to Southern Illinois, I have a spare set of 24" wheels from a 240D. They are the same as the wheels on my 2220D. They have 9.5 tires that are usable but not great. Make me an offer.

sounds like this might be his best bet. You could get those bad boys shipped on a pallet to somewhere I would think for less than $150 bucks? Freight on my last wood stove I bought (in the 600# range) drop shipped to my house from Virginia to SC was like $99 if I remember right, I am sure they got a bulk discount as they I am sure do a lot of business with them but, I would think with some clever thinking and maybe a favor of transportation to a shipping facility on one end you could have these shipped not to bad. or take the drive from Kansas to Illinois.
