If you are asking if you should go with an NAA over an 8N, the answer is that the NAA is a far better choice. You'll get more horsepower from the NAA's overhead valve engine and the NAA also has live hydraulics (they work with the clutch depressed).

thanks , yes that is what i wanted to know. I have been reading different forums for a couple weeks and Ive found a lot more discussion and info on 8N's not heard anything bad about either in general . just wondered if there was a reason behind what seemed to me an 8N bias

Jinman gave you great info..

Depending on where you are, 8n ( and 9n and 2n ) roughly go between 1000-3500 depending on condition and attachments. NAA go from 2000-4000.. Hundred series go in that range as well. In the hundred series, they have the same 134ci engine as the naa, and the 6x0 will be a 1955-1958 tractor.. and 6x1 will be a 1958-1962 tractor.. get one with a middle digit of '6'.. ie 660 or 661 and you will have both live hyds ( 1953 NAA and up ) and live pto via 2 stage clutch. For instance.. i picke dup a good condition 660 with hyd front end loader for 3500$... That live pto is nice.

An 8x0/8x1 will be similar info, except 172ci engine. Compair this to the 119ci flathead 8n/9n/2n .. etc.

Have been going to the inlaws every weekend due to FIL beeing near the 'end'. That and my work schedule are infringing on me 'spare' time.. like for eating, sleeping..e tc.. So.. I have had less relaxation time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.. Oh well.. )

It's been a long time coming.. and he's tired of fighting it.

We go down there often.. I suspect to get the call any day now.

thanks for the thoughts.

I will cast a vote for the 8n for a few reasons. If you find a '51 or '52 you will have a tractor that represents the most refined form of the first true modern utility tractor. Over the long haul, the old hydraulic system of the 8n is more durable than the "live" system on the NAA which was Ford's first attempt at this and the bugs were yet to be worked out. The 8n's predesessor (9n) was designed by Henry Ford himself with the help of perhaps the greatest tractor designer of all time, Harry Ferguson. The 8n has a little better power to weight ratio and was slightly more fuel efficient than the NAA. No tractor by any manufacturer has better parts availability than the 8n. The lack of live hydraulics may be an inconvenience, but it works fine when you get used to it.

It's also very easy to make the 8n have live hyds with the addition of an aux engine mounted hyd pump.. like a power steering pump, or thru a front stinger pump. Just need a pickup line, and pressure can be routed to the test port on the pump bas plate. OEM relief valve and intake exhaust valve will work fine with this setup... though you have to switch to the 134d type oil instead of the 90wt lube, and will need to add a filter for the aux pump due to the open sump design.

There are a couple people making these live hyd kits for the 9n, 2n, and 8n... Gives you 2x speed onthe lift and 1x speed on t he lift with clutch pressed in.. also great for adding a true live remote..
