According to an article at Bangshift.com (Available here: BangShift.com 8N Credible) the current land speed record is about 68 mph, set in 1935 by an Allis-Chalmers machine.
There will be an attempt during Speed Week by Jack Donohue, a very accomplished racer himself, to break that record with an 8N. Because of rain (and the resulting water on the salt flat) the sessions have been delayed.
It will be interesting to see what happens; certainly Donohue's project has a lot more add-ons for safety and such compared to the 1935 machine. With that said, the turbocharged Swedish tractor may give him a run for his money were he to make an FIA certified pass!
