Just bought an 8N got everything working, I am going to use it to run a pto snow blower for the winter. I am having trouble getting the ring style TSC type collor
to pop up after in got it on. The question I have is will all the modern PTO types fit on an 8N? The PTO shaft on my JD 670 compact has a groove all the way around and the Ford is a partial slot and a couple holes. Some of my older equipment used a push button type coupler, so I was wondering if there was a change acrosss the industry that made some types not fit.

The PTO shaft I have is rusted type from sitting, I can only move it a small amount, I was hoping to get it locked on then raise and lower the arms while forcing gear oil and grease into the pipe to free it up. I tried pulling it out with another tractor, but the other tractor was just getting dragged

I think that penetrating oil may be your friend on this one. Take the shaft off of the blower and haul it in your nice warm shop. Spray everything down and make sure that everything is moving right. That's where I would start.

Do you have the Sherman trans on your 8N? I remember the reverse on my dad's 8N being the equivalent of 3rd gear.....in my car. LOL

PTO shaft should fit. May need the small sleve to make the pto on the tractor the right size. You will soon be learning the difference between a "live pto" and one that is not.

do yourself a favor.

take 120$ out of your wallet and set it on the kitchen table.

you'll beed it as soon as you get the pto hooked up.

if your pto shaft ont he blower is so rusted that you couldn't pull it apart with another tractor.. then when you lift the 3pt on your poor ( abused! ) 8n, then you will undoubtedly ruin the bearing carrier and some snap rings.. and hopefully not much more. witht he bearing carrier damaged it will be easier to just buy a new repalcement pto shaft assy with seal, wear ring and carier, then fixing yours.

get that shaft moving first!!!

tugging on it while hooked to the grarbox is not good either.. not sure if you are doing that.. just saying.

now. does your 8n have the newer sai 1 3/8 pto natively ( by replacement pto ).. or does it have a slip on sleeve adapter? or is the blower you are hooking up set up for the oem short 1 1/8 N pto?

some ORC adapters will not fit well on the N pto due to the pto cap threaded collar.. I know my pin on one just barely fits.. some quick connect types may not.

post back some details.

It's tight, but I don't know much on the history of the tractor, I picked it up for a very fair price, it spent the last 40 + years dragging a flat blade down a driveway. I changed out the carb, dist and Battery. Rear seal on the tire leaks, but that is for spring. IT has chains so I will use it for using the snow blower I have. Normal winters maybe once or twice, the blade on my gator is enough most of the time. I was going to give it a summer job grading my horse arena.

I guess I will pull off the shaft, I just know some of my old stuff has a tube you press to install and lock. I wasn't sure if that was a design change with the new stuff out there

Don't think it's two rusted just real gummy, The winter here was so light last year it never moved, In the past this shaft would stick till you lifted it, I think it is more that it's was jammed down from being on a smaller tractor so the travel was very short. I will get one of the boys to yank it off and use some heat

Sorry left this off, it's the new 1-3/8 size, same as all my tractors

make sure it will collapse fully when down on the N or you will have the same problem.

sherman shifter is on the left ahread of the clutch, IF you had one.. or optionally a knob on the dash lower right for a early step up..

make sure the SB shaft coupler is not a pin on style. if it is a twist.. check that it is the correct twist you are doing. also ensure the balls move in the collar when you twist it. they can rust and not move back, thus not let you put the collar on..

I have an Over-Ride clutch on my 8N shaft so I dont get pushed around with mowers etc.
