8n 12v conversion problem

Hi all, I need someone smarter than I with this problem!
I did a 12v conversion for a gentleman but have done something wrong! Put in the ballast resistor for the coil, a 12v solenoid on the starter and used an AC Delco alternator. I followed the wiring diagrams I found on here and put the diode in line. Here's were it goes wrong. Tractor started right up, ran fine and was charging. I'm done!
Nope! He calls a few days later and the battery is dead! I use the test light test, that I also found on here, and it was the wire with the diode sucking power. I turn the diode around and no more parasitic draw, I'm done now! Nope! Now it's not charging and I'm flat stumped now!
Suggestions please? Thanks in advance.

probably you have incorrect wiring.

the excite line from key on with diode goes to the #1 marked spae on the alternator. that is. you take the wire from the coil side of the key, not the hot side of the key.

the alt has 2 male spades. #1 and #2

#2 loops to the charge stud.

#1 goes to coil side of the key, thru diode.

diode has a stripe. stripe goes toward the alternator.

sometimes a test lamp is an easier way to view this.

run a test lamp from #1 to the switched side of the key, disconnect the diode wire and insulate.

;lamp should be off with key off.

key on= lamp on.

once you start up and rev over 400 rpm, lamp should flicker off. sometimes 800 rpm is needed depends on lamp and alternator.

in any case.. lamp should go off.

now, as a test, shut off fuel and let engine stall. when engine stalls with key on, alt lamp should pop back on. turn key off. lmap should go off.

if it does.. it is wired correctly.
