I have the opportunity to purchase a 88" 3 point Alamo flail mower that was a former mower for a highway department.
The question I have is can I pull it with my 3644 shuttle Montana tractor? I have 38.5 HP and maybe 32 PTO Hp and about a 3600 lb tractor that has loaded tires.

From My research the thing is pretty massive and probably weigh about a 1000 lbs.

What does everyone think? I am planning on cutting grass 12-18" and an occasional sprout , but really not any brush.

Does anyone have any experience with this size tractor/flail mower combination?

depends what you want it for .I had a 72 " mott on the back of a small massey,I think 30 hp gas,in tall grass 36" it would almost kill the motor but in 12" or shorter grass it worked excellent.I sold it for a 5 foot bush cutter since I only need one for cutting the field once or twice a year

If the Alamo has finish blades on it, your Montana may be OK with it. If it has the heavy rough cut hammers, you'll probably be underpowered. Either way you will need to have additional weight on the front of the tractor to counter the 1000# hanging off the rear. I run an 72" Alamo flail mower on my Mahindra 6000 (50 HP) and have plenty of power. The one time I put it on my Branson 3510, power was OK but the front end felt light even with the loader on it. I have the finish blades and use it for mowing grass. I estimate my 72" Alamo weighs close to 900 lbs.

I have the SHD alamo 88 rough cut blades, run it off my kubota L4400 37hp at pto, loaded tires, your a little under Hp at the pto but it will cut, 18" grass make 2 passes

my dealer said that you need about 5pto hp per foot on a flail mower. I am hoping to get an offset unit at some point for doing ditches and roud sides or get a revesable vinvard muslcher to take out the heavy broom we have around here. I've seen it at 3" at the base. I think it may be good for clearing at the base of pruned back hedges that I cut back.

I've used a 74" (Ford Brand Model 718H) flail on a New Holland TC33D (29PTO HP, I think?). It has course cut blades and I've used it to cut up to 6-12" grass. Weight wise it was also no problem. Good luck.

i think you will be fine, at the worst you will have to slow down in tall grass.
