855 w/ Soot on only one injector

This is a 12-year old 855 with 600 hours on it. Recently I did some very dusty tilling requiring the air filter to be cleaned twice. I'm sure it was running rich. Afterward, the overheating light came on on the way back to the barn. I stopped immediately and let it cool down. After that day it coughed up black smoke and started hard. It ran fine with no power loss, but lots of smoke from the CCV. I tried a fuel additive, but to no effect. I then pulled the injectors. Number 2 and 3 (mid & firewall) were lightly sooted, but number 1 was covered in soot.

My question, is there something going on other than just dirty injectors?

I assume by CCV, you mean crankcase vent tube? Is it black or white smoke from crankcase? Usually white smoke from crankcase means excess blow-by past rings. Since the front cylinder injector is sooted up, I would suspect low compression on that cylinder. I would have the injectors tested while you have them out to eliminate any problems there. When it overheated, did you find a reason for overheating? Radiator clogged with dirt? Low on coolant? Loose fan belt? If all the obvious things are good, you could have a blown head gasket, cracked head or block. Lots of possibilities here, but start with cheking the injectors, and while they are out, I would test compression.

Good advice. Yes CCV or PCV, I'm not sure what the proper terminology is these days. White smoke and no new Pope. No reason for overheating other than probably running rich. Washed the air filter, but will get a new one. Will update in a couple of weeks after I get into town.
