820 JD

I have a 820 John Deere and the shaft the lift arms attach to that runs thru the rear end housing leaks. I replaced the bushings but they did not fit tight at all I just pushed them in and the shaft slid in them no problem and they still leak. I think probably the shaft is worn and possibly the holes in the housing are worn also. Any suggestions on a repair ?

Well... I'd sure look things over to have a good idea of 1.) how bad the wear is and 2.) is the shaft worn or the cast housing worn or both?

Then I'd spend an hour or so with one of the old hands in the local JD dealership and ask him/them about their experience with solving that kind of problem on the 820.

Maybe they've been able to fit a smaller, shaft OD bushing (from another model JD) or maybe they have used some of that rubberized gasket material (Permatex) to fill in the uneven worn areas and the bushing.

I don't know what a 820 setup looks like but if it is the same design as a JD 2150 i feel your pain. I put a couple sets of the rubber bushing/seal with no effect it would start leaking again before long. Replaced shaft and the metal bushings along with new rubber bushing/seals just to have it leak again. Replaced the rubber seals again and put more shims on the shaft the passes thru the rear end. I shimmed the shaft tight had to drive the keeper pin into the hole in the shaft. So far no leaks. I think my problem was that the shaft was not shimmed tight enough allowing the shaft to move around in the rubber seals eventually causing the seals to leak.

G'day i would thoroughly clean the holes out and would install the bushes with quick metal or liquid steel install the shaft and let sit to cure it sounds to me like your casting is worn and you are up for BIG$$$ to repair. If you make sure the cast is nice and dry and clean these repairs generally work extremely well good luck
