My Father in law loaned his nice 801 to a neighbor to do some mowing. The guy said he got off to open a gate and when he got back on, it wouldn't move. We towed it home and checked all the easy stuff on the SOS, changed oil, cleaned filter, checked band adj. Still won't move in any gear. I suspect the guy was running in too high a gear. I'm thinking because it doesn't move in any gear, it may be a problem before or after the transmission but I don't know anything about how these things are linked up. Don't seem to be able to find anyone who knows much about these things and we hate to take it to a shop and come out with a bill that exceeds the value of the tractor. It's a nice clean tractor and engine purrs like a kitten. Anyone have any ideas or advice? Thanks in advance.

Not an expert on the SOS but you might want to check the shiftier cable to see if it's broken. Most shops won't even work on them I know my ford dealer won't. If your going to take it to someone make sure they are familiar with the SOS.
Its funny how things run for years and as soon as you loan them out they come back broken.

Not sure if your tractor has one, but most of the SOS's had a traction disconnect on the side of the rear center housing. This would slide a splined coupler between the transmission output shaft and the pinion shaft to disconnect the rear wheels from the transmission so the tractor could be rolled freely. Without this disconnect, moving the tractor while the engine is off could be quite hard, sometimes resulting in sliding the rear tires. Its been a long time since I've worked on a SOS, but if I remember right, the disconnect lever for your tractor should be on the left side just behind the foot rest. The first few years didn't have this disconnect, and I can't remember when they started using it.

yes. this one has the disconnect and we had to disconnect it to move the tractor so at least we know that is intact.

both the 3 and 4 cyl 202 jhobs had the disconnect.. but you found them on different sides.

to the OP.. does the pto spin?

if no pto.. and the trans is locked down.. then the torque limiter hub may be stripped out
