Hi to all, I am Installing a 8' 2stage snowblower on a chevy 4X4 and want to run a pump by belt on the engine of the truck and then install a hydraulic motor to run the snowblower. the snowblower should turn at 540rpms. what I have read so far it looks like I need to run about 30 - 35 gpm at around 2000 psi. I figured i could run a electric clutch on the pump to turn it off and on. if anyone has info or advice I would really appreciate it. also if someone has a pump or motor they would like to sell i would also be interested. thanks in advance for any help.

thanks again

I think that would be very difficult to get adequate power. This SnowVac - R & L - Hanson Truck Mounted Snowblowers place has some but run off of a separate engine, even then power may not be adequate for size. Maybe a separate engine in bed powering hydraulics only could work. Good luck. Do you know anyone who has made this work?

How much do you want to invest in this?

By the time you get a pump, motor, valve, large (20+ gallon) tank, filter, cooler and some large (3/4" and 1") hose, clutch...you are going to be in the whole for $1500 at least!

Totally agree. About the only way you could do this is to run a drive shaft off the crankshaft out the front to a bumper mounted pump. You will definately need at least a 20 gallon tank as Kenny mentioned, then probably 1.25" suction, 3/4" pressure, and 1" return hoses. You would have to run a motor spool valve into the cab. I would look at getting a gear reduction gas motor instead. J_J is good with the calculations, maybe he could suggest a good size engine.

Another problem I see with this set up is trying to adjust your forward speed and keep engine rpm high enough to run the pump.

Looks good. I wonder how much snow can be cleared with that set up?

Some random internet comments said it worked well with dry snow but underpowered for wet stuff. 27HP on an 8 foot blower would be low, even if 27 PTO HP and not 27 engine HP (as in the Hanson) with inevitable losses.

Equipment like this, a moving vehicle with a hard working hydraulic attachment, works out best if vehicle has a hydrostatic drive that will allow regulating the vehicle speed with a constant high engine rpm....see lawn movers, asphalt machines, agriculture harvesters, etc etc....

Those Hanson snowblowers are P & P...Pretty & Pricey.

If I'm reading the OP's original post correctly, it sounds like he has the snowblower in his possession. If so, then he is pretty much committed to making this work.

Even if his transmission had a PTO port, he would still have the problem of keeping constant RPM's for the blower to work correctly. I think trying to run something directly off the engine is going to be a PITA to fabricate and have run reliably.

It seems that Hanson has the right idea of using a separate constant speed engine to power the blower. Notice they have a 35HP engine option.

I hope the OP keeps us informed as to his progress with this project.

Just because he has the blower doesn't always make it a good idea either! He could be partway into a bottomless pit of hassles and an unsatisfactory ending, in which case selling the blower (likely for a minimal loss if bought used) could be best solution. Not saying it for sure is that way, but unless I knew someone, somewhere had made this work well I'd advise being open to the possibility that this just isn't a good idea and cutting losses before they start mounting. Not all ideas work out.
