I read on another board that John Deere has reduced the rated hp of the 790 to 27hp gross, 24hp at the pto. This is down from 30hp gross, 25hp at the pto. This is not just a change in specs, but actual modification/change to the fuel system or entire engine.

The discussion thread even went on to say that a different engine is being installed in current production 790's. One poster even remarked that he ordered a 790 when they were rated at 30hp and was suprised when his arrived with the lower specs. Some comments were that the drivetrain which was originally designed for the 21hp 750 just could'nt handle the torque.

Do we have any Deere dealers or experts here that could verify and/or explain what's up with this?

(I know, I don't have a Deere. But, I do admire them from afar.)

Just checked the Deere website. Looks to me like a different engine. The old engine was around 90 cu in. Right?

I copied this from the Deere web site.

790 Compact Tractor (27 hp)
Cylinders/Displacement, cu. in. (liters) 3 / 81.2 cu. in (1.3L)

It's true Jerry, there was some discussion on this a while back. The engine model numbers are different now than some time before. F350Lawman may have more of the particulars.

Just speculating, it's probably a marketing thing by Deere. They probably needed to adjust the lineup to better focus on some segment. Maybe something to do with the introduction ot the 2210? The 790/990 and 5105/5205 are part of the "Advantage Series" which are more bare-bones tractors. Probably less margin for Deere as well (that's one reason I like my 790 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ). Someone with $XX,XXX to spend could get a fancy XX10 series with less hp or move to an Advantage series with more hp for the same money. I'd say Deere just took away some of that advantage which may keep some of the buyers in the higher margin XX10 series /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jerry,

Was there anything said about changes to the 990 also? It seems if Deere is going to do this to their bare bones lines, they might be considering it for all of them?

Just wondering. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Garry, I never considered buying a 990, so I did'nt commit to memory what it's specs were. They may have changed and I would'nt know it.

O.K. Thanks Jerry.

The 990 will be in my range of consideration, so I'm interested in it. A slight drop in the PTO hp for the 990 wouldn't make the difference for me. What does make the difference is that it is only a gear tranny and does not offer a mid pto as an option. But the almighty $$$$ always come in to play, so I'll keep the 990 in the cross hairs for awhile.

Mrwurm:

Yepper it's true I have one of the lesser hp rated 790's. Scott (F350lawman) is the one who told me and when I checked my model # on the motor he was right...the whole time shopping and the differant dealers I went to it was always showen to me as a 30hp/25pto tractor.

Scott and I were a little ticked to say the least but, I will say mine has done everthing I have asked of it with out so much as a grunt or hickup. I still don't like being lied to and I never did call my dealer to see if he really knew or was as blind as I was. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I saw the 790 change when I was shopping about 3 months ago. The web site was updated at that point, but I got a brochure with the old numbers on it.

They didn't change the 990 specs. I think the reason no mid PTO is available for the 990 is to give people another reason to opt for the 40xx series. Didn't matter much to me, I will get a RFM eventually.

I'm not necessarily looking to have the mid PTO for a MMM. I always figured on using an RFM myself. But a mid pto is handy for other things, like a front mount snow blower, power broom, etc. I don't believe it will be the deciding factor when I'm ready to make my decision. It's just one of those things that if I can work out, I want it. I'll be willing to drop it real fast if it means saving me a couple thousand and getting everything else I'd like. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You know Garry, if you get a 990 I'm going to be quite envious. I looked at them when I got my 790 but really couldn't justify it. It is substantially more tractor than my 790 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
