790 Fender Seam

I've got a 2001 JD 790....and when getting on and off the tractor I suppose I have put too much weight on the left fender....as it appears to be weakening at the seam in the fender, in front of the hand grip.

Has anybody else had this issue? Any fix to recommend?? Mine is not "split" yet...but it's definitely weaker at the seam now. I can see that I will need to make some corrective action pretty soon.....AND I will quit putting so much pressure on that fender when dismounting the tractor. I have a way of kinda "slithering" off that fender. :laughing: (maybe another sign that I need a new 3320? )

There have been some past comments regarding the seam on the metal fenders on the model 70's and the 990-790. Mostly, that they are areas of corrosion due to the fact that moisture and dirt, road salt, etc. collect there and start rust formation.

I'd guess that if the seam continues to weaken - you'll need to 1.) buy a new fender 2.) weld (TIG is cleaner) the seam from the bottom 3.) add a brace or two (could MIG these) on the bottom side of the fender 4.) combination of welding the seam and adding a brace or two.

'Course you'll need to repaint the fender.. so maybe 1.) is the better choice OR a new 3320!!!! :thumbsup:

Depends on how much money you want to spend...

If you're not too concerned about appearance, you could weld, bolt or rivet a doubler plate. There's a shallow bracket spotwelded under the fender, so I'm not sure a doubler would work under the fender.
Be a bit cheaper then a 3320, but your 790 still wouldn't have a rverser transmission. But there's not a big PTO HP difference between the 790 and 3320, so think about that before going into debt.
