Looking for what would be best winter diesel fuel treatment for my JD 790. I have heard howes is a good brand but want to make sure. Thanks for the help.

When I had my 790 a few years back, I used Power Service (white bottle) year round. I have a Deere 4400 now, and I still use Power Service.

Yes, especially for older tractors. Power Service has an additive for upper cylinder lubricity. When the EPA mandated ultra-low sulfur diesel, some older machines did have trouble. I'm not sure if my 2000 Deere 4400 would be affected, but an additive is cheap insurance. Wouldn't hurt your 790 either, even if it's a newer tractor.
Also, like many TBNers, I don't put a lot of hours on my tractor and summer blend fuel (no anti-gell additives) might still be in the tank during part of the winter. Most of the time, the Deere (all of the three I've had) stays in the garage most of the time, but not all the time....so, another reason to use Power Service. During our first Vermont winter, the 4400 had to stay outside since we were still in a rental house. That was a cold cold winter...several nights well below 0 degrees. I have a block heater, but that doesn't prevent fuel in the tank from gelling. I never had any problems starting or operating the tractor that winter. My ***** froze, but the tractor did OK.
Thanks. Sounds like a good idea and mine is a 2001 so probably a good idea to do so. You mentioned block heater. That's another thing that I have been kicking around. Mine doesn't have one but I am going to purchase a belly magnet one. Any good advice for one? It gets really cold over here in IL. I do store mine in my garage (not heated) and will only fire it up a dozen times during the winter moving firewood around. Thanks a lot for your help.

I also use Power Service, I use the white bottle in the in the winter and their gray bottle in the summer.
I also have a bottle of their 911 (red Bottle) on hand just in case.

I haven't heard or read much good about those magnetic heaters...no personal experience though.
If your garage is attached (part of your house), there's probably enough heat radiating from the house to keep it warm enough...and those Yanmar engines do start fairly easily in the cold. My garage in Pennsylvania was part of the unheated basement and no block heater on the 790.

I have used power service white bottle year round for many years in new and older tractors . Roy gives the benefits . I also bought a magnetic heater years ago for an old case tractor , did work but never really liked it to much . I have block heaters now in both tractors and trust them much more than the magnetic one , not even sure why I didn't trust the magnet one .

I agree with the others and also use PS white bottle year round for the same reasons Roy mentioned in post 4.
