I just found a #7 backhoe that was installed on a 955 John Deere. I can get it but what will it cost me to convert it to a 790 JD? Does anyone have the parts I need they would be interested in selling? Thanks

That's the right hoe MAX, When I was deciding what hoe to buy for a 770 (same as the 790, just different engine) I contacted J.Deere about a subframe. I think the price was $1000.00 for the main frame and about $500.00 for another piece on the #7 backhoe. more than likely you already will get the hoe frame piece, so figure in the $1000-1300.00 range. (price of metal has gone up since then).
You might have a tough time getting someone to part with just the subframe.;)

BTW welcome to TBN.

Like Tim said, you'll need the subframe and all the tractor side brackets. No clue the cost but a dealer will know. I bought mine used from a dealer and it was setup from a different tractor. They already had all the parts to convert for my 790 so I don't know the individual cost. The install was a breeze. You'll need a power beyond kit for your tractor as well.

It's a fun little machine. I use mine as much as I can, but not nearly as much as my other implements. Install and removal is very easy, so much so that I leave my hoe on so it can stay in the garage and just pull it off for mowing etc.

Can I get the 955 frame modified to fit a 790?

One more question can the backhoe be moved in the back of a full sized pickup or do I need a trailer?

I won't say it's impossible but the subframe is designed to match the tractor-side brackets and I doubt the 955 brackets match the 790. You'd have to see them side-by-side to know what is different.

And yes, you can probably haul the 7 hoe in a truck bed, if you have a way to load/unload. Mine was forked onto my trailer and I swapped subframes then hooked it up to the tractor to get it off the trailer.

Those two tractors are very different, might take quite a bit of mod work, but with a welder much is possible, but might not be practical? (I'm game for just about anything to save a grand ;) )

Like Rob said, a full sized pick up is okay if you have a way to load and unload. That's how I transported a slightly heavier hoe.

If it's a good deal I recommend you get it, nobody has anything bad to say about their 790 with a #7 backhoe.

Good luck...

Ain't that the truth! I made a couple of different subframes for 955s and
that tractor has a convenient full frame to mount them to. The 790 is
a larger tractor with engine/tranny assembly used as a stressed member.
The 955 has a lower stance vs the 790 also.

As for pickup truck transport, I have done it that way, but with a
pallet and forklift. MUCH easier on a low trailer. Without a pallet or
without using a tractor mount with hydraulics, an unattached hoe is a very
cumbersome and unstable load.

The JD configurator lists code 1005, Bundle BM22373, Mountings, hydraulics, subframe, and rear hanger brackets for the 790, at $1205 list price. You would have to order through your salesman rather than parts department. The prerequisites are listed as follows:

Tractors Must be Equipped with a Front Loader. 3005, 790 and 770 Tractors Require BM18005 Power Beyond Kit and AM107212 ROPS Extension Kit. On 3005, 790 Tractors with 11.2-24, 4PR (R1) Tires, the Stabilizer will not Contact Ground for Adequate Stability.

Hope this helps.

I have a 756C subframe hoe sitting in my 1/2 ton pickup right now. Just came in from mid Florida with it. I also have a couple of shears in the truck with it, and one of the shears took 3 guys and a box of wheaties to load by hand. Don't know the size difference between the two hoes, but I put the bucket/outriggers in the front and let the frame sit on the tailgate.
