The front left wheel all of a sudden seized up on me. After lifting the front end, I can rotate the wheel from about 10-2, no farther. I tried it in 2 and 4 WD, checked the front end oil, etc. Before taking it apart, does anyone have an idea what the cause may be?

With the front wheels up --- what happens when you try to spin the other wheel by hand?

Do you hear any unusual noises coming from the "pumpkin" --- the front differential housing?

If so, you probably have some main differential gear damage. However, I'd be more inclined to believe that you've got a pinion gear on that wheel that's gone gunnysack.

Now is a great time to be diggin' through the JD Technical Manual for the 650-1050 series tractors...

The other wheel spins freely and I don't hear any noise coming from the pumpkin. I've been meaning to pick up a tech manual, but never really needed it, 'til now.

It sounds like you probably have a broken tooth in one of the gears in the final drive drop housing. Check out gear #2 in the attached picture. also look at the gear it meshes with. This comes apart pretty easy. Just remove the six bolts and be sure to keep the shims(#5) in the same position as when you remove them. They keep the gears meshed properly. Also be sure to look at bearings(#3&11). If the bearings are worn, that might cause broken teeth on the gears.

Thanks jd110, I've been looking all over the web for that. I coulnd't get into JD Parts for some reason. Thought it might be there. Is there any tension on the steering linkage, and anything else I need to know about? I see your a seasoned mechanic. I raised the front end with the loader, and have a jackstand under the problem side. Should I raise and support the front end equally? This is a huge help!

Hey MichMan, where are you located? I'm in Brighton. This the beginning of a local TBN section?

Get to the JD parts views from www.johndeere.com
Click on Agriculture, then Parts, then view parts catalog. Type in your model and view all the parts and part numbers.

I'm from Britton, 10 miles west of Cabela's. Thanks for the JD site info. I've been there before, but made a wrong turn sonewhere. I just won a tech manual on eBay, so that will help out a bunch. The inner hub with 6 bolts that is star shaped in the diagram, is not star shaped on my tractor, so I cannot get to the bolts behind it, except for a couple. I need to find the best way to get at it without taking apart anything not neccessay.

MichMan, good grab on the tech manual! I learned a similar lesson with my tractor and finally got in on some bidding wars on Ebay for the tech manuals for both the powerplant engine series (Yanmar) and the tractor series 670-1070 in my situation.

One recommendaton --- if you're gonna be in there pulling things out and putting things back in --- might consider new bearings... If they're getting up there in hours, like jd110 mentioned, could be the reason you might have a chipped tooth on a gear surface.

Best of luck,

AKfish

Just got the manual today. It is well written and hope to tear into it this weekend or early next week. I'll probably replace as many "wear" parts that I can while I've got it tore down.
