72\" mmm on TC29D

I'm considering buying a TC29, and my local dealer said he had trouble with the 72" mmm and recommended the 60". Has anyone else had this problem or other problems with mmms?

Re: 72\" mmm on TC29D

I can't provide information on a 72" MMM on a TC29, but I can provide information on the difference between a 60"MMM and a 72" MMM when mowing. The 60" MMM will provide a smoother cut, not wind-row grass clipping as much as the 72"MMM. The 60" MMM will cut rougher terrain without scalping than the 72" MMM. This may be what the dealer is refering to as having trouble with the 72" MMM. A 72" MMM in high grass, damp or wet grass coupled with rough terrain leaves a rough looking yard. This is my opinion. I am sure others also have a opinion on this.

Another 'issue' with the 72" MMM is that it sticks out farther than your rear tires which means that just because your tractor can get through an opening doesn't mean the mower will. Could be dangerous in some situations.

I should have clarified that the dealer said the 72" was physically not a good fit and caused some sort of mechanical problem. I was hoping to cut down mowing time but since half my ground is uneven terrain it sounds like gouging and scalping may be a big problem with the 72. Thanks for your replies, folks!

Re: 72\" mmm on TC29D

Neil,

I have had both mowers. The 60" on my TC21D and a 72" on my TC29D. Both mow the same. The windrows is no different on the 60 versus the 72". Both decks I just lifted my shoot up a bit and totally eliminated any windrow problems. Wet grass is no difference, we shouldn't be out there mowing with either one. However, I have had really no trouble when I had to mow in wet grass. The only difference that I can see is the scalping issue. If you have a flat surface to mow then that isn't an issue either. In my case I have hilly surfaces so I have been forced to mow at a higher level than I really like to.

Now I personally don't believe the New Holland mower is the best out there for mowing all around. Some have complained along with me. Buying the Gator Blade option has made most of us much happier.

Any more questions just reply

murph

Re: 72\" mmm on TC29D

I have the 72"MMM on my TC33d.........It replaced a kubota with a 60" belly mower. It took about a year of mowing to shave/scalp (with the 72") our yard to produce the quality of cut of the old 60". Thus said, the yard looks great now !! We really mow short, we also roll every spring for the 1st 2-3 mowings. I wasn't happy with the deck at first, but all is OK now...........Tom

This danger becomes a big asset when wanting to trim close around trees and other obstacles.

Re: 72\" mmm on TC29D

A 5' deck seems to me to be too small for such a powerful machine. Heck, my little craftsman rider has a 4'. For a machine the size of a 29D, I think I'd strongly consider the 6'. You've got more than enough power for it and as others have said, having the deck sticking out a little can be just a much of an asset as a hinderance. If that really worries you, move the wheels out. I think you'll really appreciate that extra foot of coverage.
