Does anyone have any idea why this 7018 H4R type of rod don't work on my AC welder? Are they DC rods by any chance? They were new almost and are 3/32 gauge.

I don't have any problem with 7014 from the store, and maybe a little with 6013, but these I can't strike an arc at all. Maybe a little sticking and a couple sparks is about all I get.

I used these rods at a school and they worked fine with their big welders by not on mine. It maybe easier just to throw them away and not worry about them, but I am puzzled.

Send them to me, I will test them for you:D... regular 7018 is a DC rod. but I have seen sheild arc use then on AC with good results.. course he could probably pick up a coat hanger out of the parking lot and use it too... they make a 7018AC that is supposed to work well on AC, I have never tried any.. on 7108 you need to break the "corn" that forms on the end of 7018 off before ;you restrike them either use a rough file. or I just use my thumb to pop it off and make sure you can see the actual metal end of the rod. . What brand are these rods..? Not Harbor freight I hope.. Are you trying to strike an ARC too cold..? but I would not throw them away even if the flux was falling off of them.. Welding rod is good metal you can use for other things.

I googled, and looks like they are Lincoln rods..? if so they should be good. but DC+ would be the preffered way. 65 to 100 amps or so.

Well the Lincoln site says they are Ok on AC... 80 to 120 amps.. I give up. Also says "easy restrike"

You probably know this but I'll write it out anyway. The 7018 is not the easiest rod to use as KOua pointed out you have to make sure the metal is showing. I allways seem to struggle with them, once I do get started I try to keep going. I noticed you also mentioned 6013, do you prefer that over the 6011? Personally I like the 6011 much more

Okay, when it warms up a little I'll try it again. I thought I tried with all kinds of heat settings but I'll go at it again.
