Got word last night that a 7 year old boy got mad at his 9 year old sister because she wouldn't do something he wanted her to do. He shot her in the face with his bb gun. Didn't hit her in the eye. I understand he is being punished in a variety of ways by his parents.

Had the thought this morning that he wasn't anywhere near mature enough to be out with a BB gun uncontrolled. Also going to have to rethink about my 9 year old playing with these kids in the future because wherever you find the sister, the boy is not far behind.

Sounds like a spoiled brat that is used to getting his own way, and yes 7 years old is too young to have a BB gun unsupervised.

I started hunting with a single shot 22 when I was about 7,as long as I stayed in sight of my grandpa,[hunting groundhogs]. And on my own when I was not much older. But,yeah,7 is a little young to be out by yourself, heck, you might shoot your sister!

Kids do really stupid things. I agree that 7 yo is far too young to have a BB gun. That's still cap gun age. I'm thinking 11 or 12 depending on the child.

When I was about 8, my older brother and I were playing with homemade bows and arrows. We used straight limbs from chinaberry trees for the arrows. He was up in a sycamore tree shooting arrows while playing cowboys and indians. He ran out of arrows and asked me to throw some up to him. Well . . .why should I throw them when I had a perfectly good bow in my hand? . . . Yep, you guessed it right. I shot an arrow up for him to catch. It hit him right on the bridge of his nose, about 1/2" from his right eye. I will never forget the feeling I had thinking that I had just put out my brother's eye. I think I cried more than he did.

I feel stupid about this because my kid had told me that the 7 year old had a BB gun, and I thought my kid meant he had some kind of play gun.

jinman. I'm glad you didn't put your brother's eye out.

I guess we all do dumb things and immediately wish we hadn't. I sure have.

And who is punishing the parents?
This is why new laws are made because some people have no clue.....

I think there are already laws a plenty, but your right about many people not having a clue.
But even if you passed a specific law not allowing a kid under a certain age to be alone with a bb gun, nothing would change there[there probably already is a law?]

I guess 7 year olds do dumb things in general. Around that age I got my hands on a bow and some target arrows. As I recall there was another boy and a girl-all of us around the same age hanging around-taking turns shooting this weapon.

I nocked-up an arrow & pulled back with all of my might on the bow string and shot an arrow straight up into the sky. Then all three of us ran at full speed as hard as we could so as to not get hit. And where did that arrow land? Landed right into my right thigh the moment we all stopped running. Good thing it was a target tip. And yes it left a mark!

Yeah shooting an arrow into the air where it falls,I better care.
Almost killed my self doing that trick,I was probably 11 or 12,had a good[not toy] recurve bow,was messing around in the middle of this big medow, alls by myself, layed down flat on my back and using feet was seeing how far I could shoot, anyways, shot a few pretty much striaght up,but could follow them with my eye and none landed real close,but..this one..the one that had my name on it,shot it up and for some reason took my eyes off it,well it was the one cause of wind or something, that decided to come back to the spot it was launched, was looking for it,almost in a little panic, couldn't see it,than probably 1 second before it would have went through my chest and pinned me to the ground, saw it and rolled,it would have maybe killed me,did not do that anymores.

BB guns, yeah,we used to shoot each other with bb guns, don't remember anyone getting hurt bad or losing an eye, think we tried to keep it below waist.

Fire crackers, wonder somebody didn't get hurt bad with them, etc, etc.

Grew up pretty wild compared to most kids in US today, lucked out and made it through it[well,so far].
